Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Caught this little basslet tonight, in the last minutes of daylight. I got a new fly rod, and I just HAD to blood it.

It's a Crystal River, "Cahill," a top choice in the under $50 market. I got it and a South Bend "Red Quill" reel for $23. They're both beginner kit, but as I'm a beginner (1 yr.), that's appropriate.

I actually hooked four of these bass in about 15 minutes. Two came to hand and two self-released. They were stacked up on the outer edge of the weed line in my little pond, and my white, size 8 popper was more than they could stand. The last one got the hook deep and I had to forcep it out by flashlight.
(My neck lanyard has a clipper, forcep, and thankfully - a micro flashlight!)

Scruff, know you just need to hang a Purple Martin soft hackle off the back of that popper :)

Well it's new, so can't say much.
I like the rod already. 99% graphite, it's light and very responsive. My first couple of casts surprise me with their ease. It's a big change from my hollow glass Shakespeare.
The reel is plastic, clunky and noisy. It's a clicker style, and it's loud. I don't like a loud fly reel. It also has a drag as many of these reels do, for no apparent reason.
