Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Cut holes and fished ,3-5 pm and only two fish ...frozen guides in 15 degree weather made the hook set on light biters (more like a pull) a tough outing .Both fish hit a small Hildebrandt flutter spoon with a Trout nibble attached .

You got it Allen ,thanks!  That's right Jim .If I don't catch much I still learn . In this case I moved a little deeper and caught a few less reluctant biters.

That strip of red meat is also where heavy metals deposit in the flesh of the fish.  Mercury is the biggest.  Trim that stuff out!

The maligned White Perch ,glad to hear of it's merits David . ALL fish have merits in my eyes ,you know that though .

That little strip of red flesh is under the lateral line. It is oilier than the rest of the fish and collects oil-soluble "bad tastes." On very large fish this extend to all sides of large filets.

Interesting perhaps, is that white perch have a short life span. This means they do not have much time to collect foul tastes and toxins as larger fish do. So while we are all chasing the whopper stripers or white bass - it may be that the white perch are actually healthier for us to eat!

Yes they taste fine but Bruce Condello made me aware of a little strip of red meat I think it was that should be cut out and discarded.

THe nice thing about white perch is they taste good.

Here in SC there is no bag limit on them, so you may take them to your hearts content.

sounds like the yellow bass we have around here.12 inches is a big one but they do breed with white bass sometimes so it gets confusing.they can takeover and stunt and push out other panfish.they are extremely aggressive .they have taken over a few small lakes near me

In their native range, White Perch are in saltwater or brackish water, and move into freshwater to spawn in Spring, and once again in Fall for the Fall Feeding Binge.  Like their large cousins, Striped Bass, they can exist in Freshwater all their lives.  Try fishing for them in the lower sections of rivers that have access to the sea of estuaries.
