Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Went out for the late afternoon bite. Caught a LMB and 4 Bluegills, 3 of which came home with me. Caught the gills on one of those pink tungsten ice flies, like the one I sent to Slip Sinker. Tipped the ice fly with a Gulp red Euro Larva.

Slip, that's a HT tip-down.  Got it at Blaine's Fleet and Farm.  All their remaining ice-fishing inventory is on end-of-season clearance.  Wish I had the money for an ION electric auger.....

I'm not sure if there's a Blaine's near you.

John, Portage Lake, Jackson County.  There are many other Portage Lakes, one of which is in the Waterloo area over in Washtenaw County, I believe.  At the location pictured, I parked and walked out from a State Park, and I'm only about 100 yards from the boat ramp, maybe less.  I'm in 16 FOW, with 8 1/2" of ice.  It was making ice, that's for sure!  Temps in the teens with a decent breeze and no snow cover on the ice.  Talking like crazy!

There's a county park on the other side of the lake that you can use to access the lake, but you're going to be walking about quite a ways, maybe a quarter-mile, to get to deeper water.  It's just a shallow weedy flat in the summer.  Might be a good place to set up for Walleyes.  I know there are some in that lake.

ive been wanting to fish portage lake, was wondering how far from shore you had to go. i have to drag my stuff and with a new knee i have to limit my self on the distance i walk. it is about a 4 hr drive for me so if i cant access the fishable area i cant go out.
