thanks for sharing the technique!...

my nephews 3 year old son Connor spends alot of time with us fishing and has just learned how to effectively cast a spinning rod slip/float setup equipped with a #12 circle all he does is reel in and the hook is set. great for kids. hes had a few fish completely swallow hooks that have just popped out with a slight pull.

Thanks, John.  Slip, I use a #8 Owner Mosquito hook.  I may have to try a circle, I think I have some small ones somewhere...

The aerodynamics of my rig are such that the bait/hook are ahead or at least even with the float during the cast.  A bit of feathering the line before impact makes sure the bait is extended away from the float when it lands on the water.  So the bait will sink in an arc with a tight line to the float.  With any little movement of the float, I'll reel in a bit, most times it's fish on, if not, let it re-sink and try again.  Most of the fish I got were lip hooked,  a few needed the forceps, but none were gut hooked.

thanks for sharing your rigging tips... i have never tried free falling the bait under the float... im going to have to give this a try... i was always afraid of the gut hook... what style hook do you use? have you tried circle hooks with this approach?

Thanks Slip, they work like a charm.  Used it on a #8 mosquito hook about 18" below a slightly weighted fixed float, no other weights.  I think the sloooow drop rate was the trigger.  I caught a lot of gills in the 8.5-9.5" range.  Was hoping to break 10, but it wasn't to be.  This setup caught some nice pumpkin seeds too, and a ton of nice size golden shiners
