Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Here are some samples of what I caught a few days ago. These are from my Dec 2009 stocking.

Here a good pictures of the gills and green sunfishs
Can you catch a few more and up load a few more pictures? Where did you get you fish from? Dud it all good. A good pond needs a good predator to keep it in check. And if it has to be you then get a bucket of crickets and enjoy. A pond of fat fish is a pond of fun.

I would add and have added a few bass to my pond. When I stocked it it was 400 HBG and 100 LMB the bas kind of feed it in balance. I added 100 more straight gill about 6" to ofset the decline in the hbg off spring. My tinking is keep a hook wet. Catch and release the good one and eat the others. I have found and many pond owner agree a good note book listing what you caught type & size is the biggest part of managing a pond. A good starting point is 55lb of fish per acre plus the forge fish. You might get you a pond manager like this one.

Could I have been sold a 2nd or 3rd generation HBG, as I hear they take on more of the GSF looks?

Just wondering, plus since no other body of water gets into this pond, would they have been brought in by birds?

I wonder if that is why they do not seem to take the feed, I know the turtles like it, and I did see a few small Catfish eating it?

Would it hurt to go ahead and put in some large Native Bluegill and Redears or should I wait and get these numbers down first?

I gotta agree with Walt on the fish I had stock the BG/SF too but my sons caught and put some sunsh in my pond. I caught and took out the son fish. ( Put them in a local lake) I then added 100 straight BG to my pond. I tagged some picture with comment. Good luch on your pond.

One last comment/question: was the pond devoid of fish when it was stocked? If you just dug it them I would assume yes; if it's an older pond, green sunfish are known for getting into ponds without being stocked, so they could have already been in there, in which case the hatchery might have sold you actual hybrid bluegill like the one in your other picture but most of them would have gotten eaten if the GSF were already present in the pond.

Zach, if you have a lot of those in your pond they will quickly overrun it if you're not careful. If you're catching a lot of them I would strongly recommend adding several adult largemouth as soon as possible. Most hatcheries sell adult bass; they're expensive, but you won't need as many as you would with a smaller size, thirty or forty per acre if the bass are at least a pound apiece. If the hatchery you bought the GSF from sells adult bass I would suggest to them that they give you some adult bass to make up for defrauding you. Or maybe you don't want anything else to do with them - I certainly wouldn't blame you for that. What is the name of the hatchery?

Those are pure green sunfish, every one of them. No doubt in my mind. I've caught a lot of green sunfish over the years, caught a couple just two days ago in a pond I manage, and those are definitely them. If I were you I would be talking to the hatchery about a refund.
