Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Got 7 today from this pond on reversed rigged Senkos fished on top of algae matts for explosive surface strikes. Buggest went 2.5 lbs.

I have not had problems with braid other than if you get a tangle you are in trouble...might as well switch outfits or change out a spool that is already filled with new mono or braid.

And yes, Steve, I love those eruptive strikes! I miss 9 out of 10 on a scum frog, but hook 9 out of 10 with the reversed -rigged Senkos. Go figure?!?!?

Never used braid Jim,just mono. Maybe I'll have to start.Does braided line cut up your rod guides any more than mono?

John...the braid is very thin...20 lb test is 6 lb mono diameter, you can make very long casts, 80 ft or more, with it.

20 -30- LB TEST!!!!BOY WAS I OFF! You can't cast very far with that heavy line I guess but probably don't need to.Gotta check my heavier poles and reels and see if I have adequate equipment .Thanks Jim!

We are using 20 or 30 lb Stren Sonic Braid in green. Palomar knot for the hooks, no weight, cast right into the slop, and twitch and inch the worm accross the top of the junk. Many strikes are up through the slop, but you can get some by crawling your worm to the edge of an algae mat and then letting it drop off the end of it, sinking slowly through the water column. This is hand to hand combat, and strong hooksets and brief but furious battles enable fish to survive in the heat and shallow water that we are catching them. Got my 24 incher this way!

Good Luck!

Yes, we take and rig a 4 inch Senko or Yum Dinger in-line on an off-set worm hook so that the 'tapered' end of the worm is forward, covering the hook eye. This way, we can retreive the worm right on top of the slop and algae with it catching almost no grass or gunk. Bass lay underneath the floating vegetation and blow up on the worm as we inch it along the top of the slop. Try it!
