  • John Sheehan

    yeah ,what is it?

  • paul sach

I caught it on a Jitterbee as you can see it in its mouth ....I'm thinking its some type of
Hybrid Warmouth ..the stripes on the side looks like a Warmouth ..but the head looks like a Bluegill ..wierd huh ....
  • Jeffrey D. Abney

Bluegill x Warmouth maybe....mouth doesn't look as big as a true warmouth but it's hard to tell with it not open......Cool looking fish Paul

  • paul sach

But yellow in color like that ...in all my years fishing Florida, lakes, ponds, canals, swamps ..never caught a fish yellow in color ...I couldn't believe my eyes when got it out of the water. ...wild
  • DAVID L EITUTIS

UNBELIEVABLE never in all my limited years have I seen one like this!  VERY pretty fish anyway !!

  • Jeffrey D. Abney

Most of the Warmouth I catch here in North Carolina are very dark but here is one I caught in June that favors the one you caught Paul....Was the mouth on your fish the same size as this one's mouth Paul?

  • paul sach

Yes thats it ok ...it almost looks like a cross between a warmouth and a rock bass ..the goggle eyes look like a rock bass ... Mine is much more yellow in color ..the one in your pic Jeff has that brownish rock bass tint ......thank you
  • Walt Foreman

The mouth is way too big to be a bluegill.  Looks to me like a straight warmouth.

  • dick tabbert

Looks like a Warmouth to me to Walt.

  • Greg McWilliams

    BEAUTIFUL WARMOUTH!!!!!!

  • Greg McWilliams

    What is the JITTERBEE????

Mike, just goes to show you can't trust everything you find on the internet, AND, illustrates how difficult it can sometimes be to correctly identify a sunfish!

I am by no means an expert, but I have a different take on your photos....

The one on the left, that is labeled a Rockbass, looks more like a Warmouth to me, while the one on the right, labeled a Warmouth, is almost certainly a Green Sunfish.

  • Tony Livingston

Quick tip here: we all know the anal fin is the fin on the bottom of the fish, right in front of the tail...it is usually comprised of sharp, rigid 'spikes', or rays, and soft, flexible rays....

Rockbass will usually have 6 sharp, rigid rays, while Warmouth will only have 3..almost foolproof...almost. I've never counted rays on a warmouth hybrid....

Take a look at the photo Mike posted of a supposed Rockbass... It very plainly shows three sharp, rigid spikes or rays....hence, it's a warmouth. The color, while not a good way of identification by itself, also backs up the Warmouth I.D.
