john, One lake I fish for perch has a channel running into it, but a couple other ones have no running water entering them. I usually work the drop offs in around 20 feet of water as I work around the lake. I like the underwater bays and points. I have my best luck for winter perch right at sun up till about 9am and sundown till dark. When is your favorite ice fishing times?
Chuck ,when does ice fishing usually start for you ? Here it seldom starts ,for me at least, before Christmas and usually I guess around New Years . My fishing time preferences ,'bout the same as you for morn and about 3pm -dark. The crappies start hitting a little before dark which I really like sometimes that's when I get more White Perch too. .Yellow Perch are great though because they'll hit all day .Just gotta fish the effective depth. In my small lake I usually catch them midday about 12' but other lakes it can be 20' or more . I usually fish the evening bite .In the morn I'm drinking coffee and visiting this site !
9/26/13 Yellow Perch were active in the shallows by a feeder Pipe hitting small floated Jigs .It should just keep getting better for them at the local lake till early December .
Yesterday the tandem Jig Rigs and Slip Float /Jig Rig caught 65 fish ,except for a few yesterday on a 10th oz. Thunderbolt spoon .Mostly Yellow Perch 9-11" ,some real nice thick Crappies 11-13",about four White Perch up to 10.5"and three Gills to 8" .Got three Doubles on the Tandem including a White Perch /Yellow Perch Double .Most fish came on the Tandem rig but float rig caught real fine Crappie! Fishing into the wind at the dam end of the lake produced great numbers and consistent action for 4 and 1/2 hrs.!
Finally tried this fantastic way of cleaning Perch .I'm hoping the bones fall away from the flesh after cooking like the video says http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjTlFwQb7D0
Tandem jig rig with twister tails worked great on Yellow Perch yesterday when the water surface was calm ! So did the floated tandem marabou jigs tipped with the mussel bits after the wind picked up .
No Jim ,didn't keep any but thinking of going back with that intention another day . David, swimming Buck tail Jigs ,white/brown caught 21 and caught one other swimming a Squirrel tail . Then I rested the spot and tried a wind blown point hoping for Crappie and Bass using a slip float white Buck tail and caught another YP. Came back to spot one and caught another on the squirrel tail and called it quits . It was happening the 1st hour ! I would love to get on bigger Perch and have a lake in mind 20 minutes from my house .Next year perhaps .
James- I do have a honey hole and since I am casting and retrieving up rip rap from shore , I'd rather lose a 50 cent jig than a $3.50 pimple .I 'll save the pimples when I'm in a boat or through the ice .You're right Perch do like them . Lost one jig today after it caught 21 fish .
5/22/14 Perch have vacated the shallows and dropped back to 5' flats adjacent to creek channels. Using 1/8th and 1/4 oz. Dardevle and Acme Kamlooper spoons tipped with Crawler pieces or Mealworms, about 12 Yellow Perch including an 11" ,and 3 White Perch (Two 11") and 5 Gills cooperated today. Drifting at the North end of the lake with a South wind .

I do have em - some of each!
In smaller sizes, and bigger. The usual colors and a few custom jobs thrown in.
I catch fish on em, too. The brim go for the dinky ones!
The two yellow spoons worked the best the other night on the Perch and Gills. All three caught though . The Devle Dog has gotten decent Bass in the past , the Red/White snared a trout I recall and the Kamlooper with its slower fall and smaller size has gotten Gills in past years.
My best gill getting spoon has been the mini size Silver Minnow.
I hoard those, though, as they are hard to find.
I recently caught a nice warmouth on a hammered willow leaf, and the same spoon has gotten yellow perch in the past.
Small spoon fished near structure has worked this time of year, although the inshore YP bite is passing... You might get one early morning, but they are heading for open water once daylight hits the water.
After a serious rain, the White and Yellow Perch ,as well as lots of Gills and a few Crappie ,revisited the shallows by the pipe inlet . Good action with about a dozen Whites ,countless Gills and Yellow Perch and a few Crappie .Worms, Tube Jigs, Mealies were effective .

Chuck, can I venture to guess some of your spots have water entering the lake nearby ?
