I've been a member about 15 months now and I check in several times daily. I even went fishing about 1pm yesterday, so not only do I like to talk about it but I actually do it too! I caught some nice coppernose yesterday and released them all. Prior to joning this site, I would not have let them go. My point is that reading about the experiences and thoughts of different people on the future of bluegilling has made me more aware of what I really fish for. It's the hunt! I keep all I want to clean for eating and freezing. We do have big fish frys from time to time and I am the supplier and fryer. But yesterday, I just wanted to relax and catch some bluegills. I purposefully left my camera at home, never measured or weighed one and didn't even think about cleaning any. Tomorrow, I may keep the limit, but yesterday I threw back about 12 nice 'uns. Sixteen months ago, I would never have considered that. Either I'm just getting lazier, or Big Bluegill.com and these discussions have changed my thinking!
Today's strange fact:
Crickets do not produce chirps by rubbing their legs together. They have on each front wing a sharp edge, the scraper, and a file like ridge, the file. They chirp by elevating the front wings and moving them so the scaper of one wing rubs on the file of the other wing, making a chirp.
Dolbear's Law:
Because crickets chirp at a different rate of speed, depending on the temperature outside, it is possible to calculate the temperature in Fahrenheit degrees by counting the number of times a United States snowy tree cricket chirps in 15 seconds and then adding the number 40. This formula is referred to as "Dolbear's Law."
Hey, its getting a little slow around here, shouldn't we stir it up a bit. How about you Okies, you know who you are, make some kind of stupid bet with Bruce about the Oklahoma / Nebraska football game this weekend, I heard Bruce say , " Look it up in history , Sooner means Cheaters " , Watch out Bruce , the Sooners are planning to make their next Land Grab in the Nebraska End zone.
You know he was going to fly in to see the Aggie game. Save a few buck by not making that trip. Might just save a few more chips and stay home again. If he didn't like that game he's sure not going to care for this one.
Jen now now ya'll had your chance last week. Now I really ain't got much room to that though. My Longhorns stunk up Austin this year. I don't see Nebraska stoping OU but again that just an old UT guy.
Let's see, Texas beat Nebraska, Oklahoma beat Texas, I guess that means Oklahoma is going to beat Nebraska, unless Bruce goes to the game and roots his team on to victory.
Grapes of Wrath, you say, where were you kinfolks from in Ark? And Bruce, sure those Okie's were nice and cordial , they won! Under their breath they said it was a goodbuy from the Big 12.
Sharon, you've got ozark hillbilly roots. I'm further east, but I've spent a lot of time in the Buffalo River area and on the Buffalo and plan to go back, I want to make the trip from Rush to Buffalo City, about 35 river miles, catching bluegill and smallmouth, camping out along the way.
Thank you for having me. I don't really know how much I can teach cause I've always used artificial> This year will be different I'm planning on using live bait. I have over 2000 wigglers in my worm beds and just got 500 Canadian Crawlers with crickets to come as soon as it worms up. I'm hoping to do allot of brain picking and if I can answer any question I'll be happy to do that. THANKS
Yes I got the glue. I really got it for my granddaughter she doesn't like to touch bugs anymore its a girl thing but I'll get her back to normal with a little work. To answer the 2nd question I do have a little cricket cage. I'm really going to committed to using live bait. It will be hard at first cause I've used artificial for so long. I guess the proofs in the pudding.
I just decovered that my 2 koi that are about 6 years old must have bred last summer. There is now a school of about 20 of them swimming around in my minnow pond. First time I've seen them, and when I went back with the camera, they were nowhere to be seen. They are about 4". Probably hundreds in there as there are no predators. My question is: what do they eat? I have checked online and it sounds like they eat about everything, but I've never seen them eat fish pellets, or minnows. I'm hoping they won't ruin my minnow pond.
I know you can purchase a pelleted feed for them, Sharon, much like dog food. The milling company hereabouts sells it as pond fish feed.
My guess is the koi haven't learned to eat it yet, AND they are eating other things in the pond, for now. I don't know what their breeding rate is, i.e., how good they are at it. There might be a lot - or just the ones you've seen. I'd bet on a lot, though!
I do know they feed on algae, plant matter and whatever organic "stuff" they can skim from the muck on the bottom - filter feeders in that sense. If you've ever watched a goldfish in a bowl, picking up and spitting out gravel, that's what is happening. The fish is selecting what it likes from what it picks up and rejecting out the rest.
In a pond where there has been only minnows, I'm certain there is much to sustain them for a while. AS they grow, though, you will want to either supplement their food or cull some of the them out. Fortunately there is something of a market for them, and I'd think you could make a few bucks on them, as "natural bred" specimens.
They are expensive here in TX, if you can find them at all. I think it was 3.50 for a dozen. Here is a way to do it yourself:
How to catch crickets for bait:
Prepare your trap. Collect breadcrumbs and sugar along with a sheet of newspaper. At dusk, go to your chosen location and sprinkle the breadcrumbs onto the ground. Top that off with sprinkled sugar. Unfold the newspaper and place it on top of the breadcrumb mixture.
Leave and come back the following morning. It is important to check your trap while it is still early, probably at sunrise. Carefully lift the newspaper. Underneath you will find wild crickets. Use the butterfly net, or paper towel tube, to catch them. If you are quick, you can use your hands.
Anyone have experience with catching and using Cave Crickets for bait .There are plenty of biggies in my garage on the walls but they spook into crevices before I can catch them .I would like to make a trap to get several lively ones and try them for bait .
WOW ! I looked them up Dick. Camel Crickets /Cave Crickets are the same critter .Both names make sense .They do have a hump back like a Camel ,and the Cave reference points to their habitation of dark ,damp places like my garage .

We need to have some fun here. Maybe a game, contest, best lie, etc. At the moment I can't think of a thing. So, the contest is:
Who can think up something interesting to do?

Well, Dick you sound like you arent messing around. Talk about stockpiling. Did you get some of the Professors Bait Glue?
What do you plan to use for toting crickets around with you?
