New additions to the library .Hunting at Dave's Treasure Hunt in Frankford Delaware  and Masons used book store in Ocean City Maryland.

  • David, aka, "McScruff"

I was scrounging the racks today, but found zip.
The wife came along and gave me the "toe tap," and it was time
    to leave.
I've seen that one with the bluegill.
  • John Sheehan

David -I was happy to find a used book store although the prices are higher than the junk shops .I don't see used stores much anymore in these parts.

  • David, aka, "McScruff"

We have alot of junk, thrift, and used shops. Almost always there are books.
Unfortunately, they are rarely in any order. It takes time to search....
and Lori isn't long on patience when it comes to me
    acquiring more fishing books.

    Nice John!
  • John Sheehan

Glad you like these Dr. James Henshall readings David .Was reading about Smallmouth Bass hibernation this morn and Perch

  • David, aka, "McScruff"

    Henschall is legend!
  • John Sheehan

Appears so, and I just found out about him today!  His favorite fish is the smallmouth Bass which I'm tempted to say is mine as well. Smallie Hibernation ,he might have been among the first to write about it in the U.S.

  • David, aka, "McScruff"

He is often quoted in the writings of others, so his status as emeritus was, and is, recognized.
I can't profess to know him well, so thanks!
  • James Feasel

    Been liking this discussion.
Fish for walleye on Erie and you'll catch some white perch and you will be disappointed that it is not a walleye.
Thanks for some of these links. Just downloaded 7 books off the Gutenberg.org site.
The most recent book I have read is Scotch Loch Fishing. Not a technical book. Fairly easy read. Author is just talking fishing in the day (1870-1880's). Entertaining use of words and slang. Hard to imagine being concerned about a railroad causing easy access and ruination of a fishery.
  • John Sheehan

jimvision , you are welcome ! I, like you enjoy  the old world fishing history .

  • John Sheehan

Hey Jimvision! Which Seven Titles did you get ? A bucket list item is to fish Scotland someday .Visited Scotland once and want to go back.

  • James Feasel

Got another one by the Scottish guy titled Lines in Pleasant Places. I load a lot of books onto my phone for easy access entertainment. Read some sitting in a tree stand this fall. Sometimes titles hint of fish or fishing, and turn out not to be so. Easier to load and start reading instead of further research. Currently reading the Determined Angler and the Brook Trout. Others loaded and waiting: Recreations of Christopher North vol 1, Favorite Fish and Fishing, Fisherman's Luck and Other Uncertain Things, Angling Sketches, Jim Spurling Fisherman, the Cornish Fisherman's Watch Night and the River's End. This last title had no fishing connection, but was somewhat entertaining----same guy who wrote the Grizzly King which later became the movie--the Bear---1980 something.

Welcome to the group Matt. Presently in the middle of my 2nd John Gierach book these days .Wife and sister -in-law Christmas presents :'No shortage of Good Days' is a multi species fly rod account like a Diary and has some clever humor in its delivery .Ya gotta sift through for good tips you may never use if your home waters or likely possible trips  don't apply however. It's a nice read nevertheless even if I don't get to fish the Colorado small waters as expressed in told in 'Fly Fishing Small Streams', which I read first .

  • James Feasel

Hey, I got one for ya. Available at most ebook retailers for free. Ballads from an unlucky fisherman by Lenny Everton. Poetry and the one called tackle box is quite humorous and I think most of us can relate. Another quick, curious free read is catfish & fish-cat by Michael allender.

    great links  Jim thanks !

  • John Sheehan

Here's a humorous anecdote from John Gierach in his book ' No shortage of Good Days': " I remember hanging out in a slightly tweedy fly shop one afternoon where the owner was promoting the first generation of powdered desiccant used as a fly floatant .A young hippie friend of mine walked in-complete with long hair and Tie dyed T shirt-and the owner asked, "Have you been using the magic powder?" The guy said," Yeah man , but not when I'm fishing ! "

  • John Sheehan

Welcome TOOTY!  I hope you add some anecdotes !

  • John Sheehan

Buck Perry ,'father of structure fishing " is my kind of fisherman. Well, I mean I'd like to have his knowledge and experience . http://www.buckperry.com/buck-perry/29-about-buck-perry

  • carl hendrix

JOHN; THATS A GREAT FIND IN THAT BOOK !;;;;  KEITH RITTER;; IS ALSO A LOT LIKE BUCK PERRY !   FIOUND THAT OUT ; FIRST TIME I FISHED WITH IM AT REEL FOOT LAKE; AT OUR FIRST RENDEVOU !

  • David, aka, "McScruff"

    Very cool
  • John Sheehan

It's really just a little booklet, Carl .But yes Dave ,still cool!

  • David, aka, "McScruff"

I've read and copied probably a dozen articles by Buck Perry, seen a few vids, noodles around the Spoonplugging forum.
Its a cool concept he had, and it makes sense. If I had a suitable boat, Is give his methods an earnest effort on our lakes
  • B. Waldman

That's a great little booklet! There were actually two versions made, with only a few small differences between the two. That one looks like the newer version. The older/original version had the price printed onto the front cover in the lower right hand corner. Around the same time or somewhat before (depending upon version) there was another little pamphlet released by Buck called, "Spoonplugging...for Freshwater bass and all Gamefish." Similarly there were at least 3 versions printed over the years (see pic).

  • John Sheehan

    B. I believe this is an 80's version that came with a kit of 5 or 7  spoonplugs I still have .  I found out the booklet  was 1st published in 1965 .

  • John Sheehan

Thanks for the input Dave and B.!

  • John Sheehan

    I never read a Zane Grey book -Here's a book I'd like to obtain : https://play.google.com/store/books/details?id=-Ui2JTsq9-0C&sou...

  • James Feasel

The Zane Grey books are good. Some are available as free ebooks.

Nice find on the spoonplug literature. My father in law has spoonplugged for many years.

It is not fishing, but I published my first book this past weekend.

  • John Sheehan

    Been enjoying this one James:

Zane Grey Tales of Fresh water Fishing :    https://books.google.com/books?id=-Ui2JTsq9-0C&printsec=frontco...

Congrats on your book ! What's it about ?

  • James Feasel

That is a good read John.

I published an ebook about pet loss called My Boney Girl. If all our relationships were like the relationships we have with our fishing friends and pets, the world would be a nearly perfect place.

  • John Sheehan

Glad you liked James I enjoyed the first four chapters(stories) .Zane Grey lived not too far from me .I want to fish the Lackawaxen creek now.Good luck with your book !

  • John Sheehan

Some Free Kindle additions to read : 'Tales Of Fishes ' ,Zane Grey, 'A Walleye Fishing Cheatsheet' ,Ben Rieger, 'Maxims and Hints on Angling', Richard Penn,'The Determined Angler ',Charles Barker Bradford. ,'The Complete Book of Surf Fishing ' Al Ristori

  • James Feasel

Tales of Fishes is a good book. Would be really cool to have enough money to enjoy that kind of life. The Determined Angler is interesting being so old. It is not necessarily an easy read.

  • John Sheehan

Looking forward to reading them James.Another free book i  downloaded on the Kindle is,'The Essential Trout Fishing Guide'.

  • James Feasel

Recently read American Notes by Rudyard Kipling. Not really a fishing book, but has a chapter about salmon fishing--late 1800's western US as experienced by Mr Kipling. It is always a nice surprise to find a fishing story hidden in a book not about fishing.

  • John Sheehan

A wealth of Fishing knowledge with many contributors! My favorite Fishing Book .

  • John Sheehan

I have a Revised edition of 'Trout Fishing' I am gonna re read.  I was glad to see several references to Edward Ringwood Hewitt , another Fly Fishing Pioneer , in Joe Brooks' ,'Trout Fishing ' . I have a blog on Hewitt that I will re-post after adding some of Joe Brooks references . I constantly add to this blog the more I learn about Hewitt's importance to the development of Fly Fishing.
