Vintage Equipment Group

I know this sounds strange, but vintage equipment like fiberglass rods still have a place! We can talk shop and discuss why some vintage gear is just as good (if not better) than the new stuff.

here is another oddball thing i have had for years

  • jim cosgrove

anyone one know what it is?the plastic prop and bead are attached to an elastic cord insibe the lure that pulls on a spring loaded plunger that i am guessing sucks water into the vents on either side of the head.i think it then pushes water out the tail where there is a hole.i think you pull hard on the lure pause and the lure proplels itself for a bit.water jet lure?

  • dick tabbert

Jim I don't know what it is but it is unique and thinking in the back of my mind here it is sunset and you cast it next to a fallen tree and bang, kinda makes me get a little excited.

  • dick tabbert

No john but I do have a couple waterdogs. I Use to use them for trolling pike, they are in a tackle box in the barn and I guess I should retire them also.

  • John Sheehan

Yes these are not Waterdogs or Hellbenders ,just looked it up .I have one of these  that you show ,a plastic from the mid 80's I think. Do you have Hellbenders?

  • dick tabbert

I think I do I'm going to check a little later.

  • dick tabbert

John kind of funny how we can look back in our old stuff, stuff we forgot we even had and how much we accumulated through the years. I'm headed to the barn now to see what other older tid bits I can find.

THANKS for all the new pics Dick and it appears you liked the old Hell benders some! Send me the old Shakespeare reel and I'll make it look just like new if you like.

  • dick tabbert

I appreciate the offer on the reel Tootie but then it wouldn't match the steel rod I had it on. The Hell Benders or Waterdogs  or whatever they are I got in the 70's. Got lots of Nortern Pike on them trolling deep water. I don't know how vintage that makes then but I also have a balsa bait from that time It cost me quit a lot of money back then they were hot on the Bass circuits. The bait are all balsa wood the first one being the oldest. I'll post them a little later.

  • DAVID L EITUTIS

No problemo Dick and enjoyed the pics!

  • dick tabbert

    Batch 14

This one caught me a 3 pound Bass right out of the box, I used it in off colored water.

This is my oldest balsa bait bought it in the 70's.

This one has a clear coat on it you can see the wood through it.

  • Greg McWilliams

Looked at this GROUP this evening and thought where did they get that OLD STUFF!!!!!!!!!!! LOOKS like some STUFF I HAVE!!!!!! From my BAIT FISHING YEARS!!!!!! LEO this also the BUCKET I attach electric leads  to!!!!!!

  • Greg McWilliams

These were my favorites in GRAND LAKE of the CHEROKEES!!!!!! There was an GUY that was in his upper 80's cleaned fish for people when they would come in from fishing!!!! Mostly CRAPPIE and SAND BASS!!!!!! He would fillet the first one bait up his hook with guts and drop it in the water!!! Before he finished cleaning he would catch a catfish for himself!!!! Don't know what he charged for cleaning , but he could clean a FISH every 30 seconds!!!! He watched me fish around the docks and rocks, He said if you will go up to the cafe and get you Bill Norman Quarterback you will catch fish!!!!!! Cost me $1.25, but was well worth it!!!!!!! Purple was the best but I don't have any left!!!!!!

  • Greg McWilliams

Night fishin these were a must!!!!!!

  • dick tabbert

Yea Greg way back then they made things to last. I think I've got them same lures.

    My only BAMBOO ROD!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • DAVID L EITUTIS

HEY GREG, NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL VINTAGE!!!!!! OH the stories that old combo could tell if it could talk! I love the old torpedo shaped handles on these old rods, very graceful and useful. Notice the length of the cork handle? IF you measure it I bet it will be 6" or there abouts. Lots shorter than modern rods !

  • dick tabbert

    Batch 16

I think this is called a Lazy Ike

  • dick tabbert

    Look Like Bagley Cranks Dick

  • dick tabbert

John good looking stuff. You know I have many crank baits but back when I really concentrated on Bass my go to bait were spinner baits. My most productive colors were chartreuse and sometime white. I liked a willow leaf blade in copper which you can't seem to find anymore in a spinner bait. But that was then and this is now, now my baits are smaller and I'm still trying to learn there is so much to learn with new stuff all the time.

  • dick tabbert

They are John, Bagley started the crankbait craze and to be hones't I don't know if they still make baits anymore let alone out of balsa wood.
