I know this sounds strange, but vintage equipment like fiberglass rods still have a place! We can talk shop and discuss why some vintage gear is just as good (if not better) than the new stuff.
If you really want to old school find yourself an old Shakespeare or Heddon bamboo rod. There is nothing like catching fish on a truly handmade rod with flies you have tied yourself.
I have 3 vintage fly rods with vintage reels on them..I will try to get some pictures and post...a Grizzley/Fenwick a Phillipson and a Shakesphere Wonderod I just purchased and plan to restore...One has a Airex reel, one a Ocean City 76 and I plan to put a vintage auto with a moving line guide on the Wonderod...Ya gotta love fishing with old glass and fly reels...they are a part of fly fishing history...
Howard...what are the markings on your reel...looks like a pflueger...If so, there should be some markings on the ivory cover plate...a lot can be done to those reels which a lot of people use..a old standard in fly reels...good find!!
Here is my pride & joy of my antique lure collection. A 1919 or 1920 C.C. ROBERTS MUDPUPPY, handmade and the first true Musky Topwater made available to the public.
I would have thought there would be lots of discussions extolling the merits of the vintage tackle! Oh well any one wants to talk a bit about vintage Shakespeare Wonderods I"m the dude! SPinning or fly I have em both and use em both. Well I actually have many and use em all at one time or another.
I'M GOING TO POST SOME VINTAGE ROD PICS in the very near future , if anyone is interested. Does anyone know if I can attach em direct to this group or should I put em on my page?
ALRIGHT John I'll try it tonight and if works I'll do several tonight. I'd love to see what other folks are hiding in their basements John and I know I can't be the only fanatic out there about this stuff! TOOTY
HEYJOHN HOW'S THIS ONE! IMHO THESE old Heddon Golden Mark 50s are the most beautiful rods ever made , period. This one is a 4 piece pack rod 8' rated for 7-8 weight line I believe. This one happens to be near mint. I don't think it was fished much and sits in the rod rack next to my recliner now along with two 7' Wonderod Panfish Specials.
Thanks for the heads up about how to add the pics!!! Hope you enjoy it and if you do I have LLLLLLLLLLots of other rods to take pics of.
TOP HALF of same rod John, all fiberglass ferrules and gold plated snakes. None of gold worn off of the snakes so it wasn't used much. A few minor scratches on the butt end of seat but that's about it.
Everyone is viewing history here and that's what the kids don't get about this stuff. Not the kids or younger generations fault , they just don't make stuff like this anymore. THEY ARE ANTIQUES LIKE ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YA KNOW THE ALLURE of the old stuff is something the younger generation can't appreciate, at least most of the younger generation. My sons have the same appreciation for this stuff as I do . I guess myself and a few other old timers have to carry the torch for this stuff, and I have no regrets having gone back to the stuff of my youth. Does anyone actually think most of the graphite rods so revered today would actually be used 50- 60 years from now. Probably not cause they are somewhat fragile , especially in cold weather. Just my opinion of course and what's new and next on the horizon ? More technology I'm sure and I guess that is advancement in some form or other. When these old wonderods were invented I'm sure Bamboo lovers scorned em then also.
Spoon Les Thompson No.4 ,Jointed 4 piece (Laxy Ike) Rapala original Box (Finland on white Belly stripe) Four Spinners top to bottom :Mepps Lusox 2 Les Davis Bolo 1/3rd oz.,Mitchell France with Flanged Blade,Roto Swing 3 (Swiss Swing style body)
Hey John are those Zebco lures?lllllllllllllllllol I have quite a few of the old Rapalas in the old style box and I think they work different than the newer ones, who knows.
I'll have to take a picture of my dad's whole tackle box, haha. But one of our go to ultralights is a 1960's fiberglass fenwick. nice soft, slow action
This two piece 6'6" fly rod (actually the guides resemble spinning rod )says ACTION model 1970 .Dont know anything about it but Ibelieve its fiberglass. The reel is a Daiwa 760 rated for 4,5, os wt.line .The line is double tapered.I gave a Buddy 30 bucks for everything including a DeLongs flash minnow in an opened celophane card .(not pictured )
HEY DICK, WISH YOU WOULD PUT SOME pics of the old stuff up. I have alot of books here and can find out alot of stuff for you and I'm sure the other fellas would like to help identify stuff for you too.
