Vintage Equipment Group

I know this sounds strange, but vintage equipment like fiberglass rods still have a place! We can talk shop and discuss why some vintage gear is just as good (if not better) than the new stuff.

If you really want to old school find yourself an old Shakespeare or Heddon bamboo rod. There is nothing like catching fish on a truly handmade rod with flies you have tied yourself.
  • Steve Fleckenstein

I'll have to post pics of my 2 fenwicks and cardinal reels.
  • Rob Gay

I have 3 vintage fly rods with vintage reels on them..I will try to get some pictures and post...a Grizzley/Fenwick a Phillipson and a Shakesphere Wonderod I just purchased and plan to restore...One has a Airex reel, one a Ocean City 76 and I plan to put a vintage auto with a moving line guide on the Wonderod...Ya gotta love fishing with old glass and fly reels...they are a part of fly fishing history...
  • Rob Gay

Golly Ty...I have not seen one of those super meca's for years...nice!!
  • Howard Webster

Picked this older reel up yesterday the yard sale season has started
  • Rob Gay

Howard...what are the markings on your reel...looks like a pflueger...If so, there should be some markings on the ivory cover plate...a lot can be done to those reels which a lot of people use..a old standard in fly reels...good find!!
  • Howard Webster

it is a pflueger 1494 it is made in the USA so it was worth the 2.00 I paid for it I have picked up some great deal in yard sales
  • Rob Gay

Now that is a score...Good for you...

HEYJOHN HOW'S THIS ONE! IMHO THESE old Heddon Golden Mark 50s are the most beautiful rods ever made , period. This one is a 4 piece pack rod 8' rated for 7-8 weight line I believe. This one happens to be near mint. I don't think it was fished much and sits in the rod rack next to my recliner now along with two 7' Wonderod Panfish Specials.

Thanks for the heads up about how to add the pics!!! Hope you enjoy it and if you do I have LLLLLLLLLLots of other rods to take pics of.

TOP HALF of same rod John, all fiberglass ferrules and gold plated snakes. None of gold worn off of the snakes so it wasn't used much. A few minor scratches on the butt end of seat but that's about it.

Everyone is viewing history here and that's what the kids don't get about this stuff. Not the kids or younger generations fault , they just don't make stuff like this anymore. THEY ARE ANTIQUES LIKE ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • John Sheehan

YA KNOW THE ALLURE of the old stuff is something the younger generation can't appreciate, at least most of the younger generation. My sons have the same appreciation for this stuff as I do . I guess myself and a few other old timers have to carry the torch for this stuff, and I have no regrets having gone back to the stuff of my youth.
Does anyone actually think most of the graphite rods so revered today would actually be used 50- 60 years from now. Probably not cause they are somewhat fragile , especially in cold weather. Just my opinion of course and what's new and next on the horizon ? More technology I'm sure and I guess that is advancement in some form or other. When these old wonderods were invented I'm sure Bamboo lovers scorned em then also.

This two piece 6'6" fly rod (actually the guides resemble spinning rod )says ACTION model 1970 .Dont know anything about it but Ibelieve its fiberglass. The reel is a Daiwa 760 rated for 4,5, os wt.line .The line is double tapered.I gave a Buddy 30 bucks for everything including a DeLongs flash minnow in an opened  celophane card .(not pictured )

  • John Sheehan

make that a Daiwa 706 4,5,6 wt. reel
