    Welcome Dick Tabbert!

Thanks John since I have declared perch being the best eating fish on the planet I guess maybe this is a good place to be. I'll try to add a little bit of my experience's on perch fishing. These are my opinions that I have experienced. Lake Erie is our number one lake in this area for perch. When I was young my dad and I and uncles and cousins use to go out often in the fall. We would get hundreds of yellow perch of course this was many years ago since I was a boy. We would go out to where we thought the fish were throw the anchor and fish. Back then there was no such thing as a fish finder you would go off your last outing experiences. As I got older I ask dad to hold of on the anchor till we caught some fish drifting. This was like a fish finder to me and worked quit well. We most always caught loads of perch. The key to lake Erie was to let your bait all the way to the bottom probably 12' to 15' foot around here in Northwest Ohio. We would reel in 3 turns of the reel and wait for that special bite. Most time we didn't have to wait long and the action was on. Them were memories I'll never forget along with some of the finest table fare I know.

Welcome Maurie Hefner! Amazing Perch ,you're getting into!

  • John Sheehan

Dick, you are not the first one to tell me Lake Erie ,IS the place for numbers of big Perch .Drifting and dragging a baited jig and anchoring on a school ,YUP you know ! DROP to bottom ,DRAG, LIFT a foot off bottom, WHILE DRIFTING ,till ya make contact is what I do as well Summer /early fall till they come back to the shallows . I absolutely agree with you they are GREAT table fare and I enjoyed hearing you say the memories are there to stick . A great fish ,right Dick!

  • John Sheehan

heard a new nickname for Yellow Perch today that made me laugh ; 'PRISON FISH'

  • dick tabbert

    Prison fish sorta makes sense.

  • John Sheehan

Ha ha yes Dick, the bars and stripes, plus its a prisoner to be sentenced to the frying pan if I've got a hankerin' for the great taste .

  • David, aka, "McScruff"

First time I've heard prison fish.
Coontails and Eisenhowers are the others Ive heard.
  • Jim Gronaw

I've heard 'yellow Eisenhowers' at Santee-Cooper 30 years ago! Crazy!

  • David, aka, "McScruff"

During the 50's, yellow perch were widely established in the South in a wide ranging Federal stocking program.
This effort was developed under the administration of .. you guessed it.... Dwight Eisenhower. This is where they got the name "eisenhowers."

PS channels catfish were also widely distributed under this same program, and you could get them delivered to your ponds for free at the behest of the government. I have a friend who says the fish in one of his ponds are descended from these same 1950 stockers.
In fact, he still refers to all channel cats as, "guv'mint catfish."
  • John Sheehan

Wow another name ,Eisenhower's? Thanks for the explanation David!

  • David, aka, "McScruff"

    Hey, bud, no problem.
I ain't good for much else! LOL
  • John Sheehan

You're good for a lot .Very resourceful, very curious multi species fisherman, fly tier , generous . etc.

    Always enjoy your posts!

  • David, aka, "McScruff"

    Wow thanks.
I need to let my boss read this!
    LOL
  • John Sheehan

Yeah well, if he's a good Boss he'll agree. He might hold back though , thinking you're leading up to asking for a raise!

  • David, aka, "McScruff"

    Raise? What's that?
  • John Sheehan

    Squirrel tail Jigs

  • John Sheehan

  • dick tabbert

    Great colors on that perch.

  • John Sheehan

Look at those eyes on top of the head looking upward like a flounder ! Let alone the Gills flaring like a reluctant captive!

  • John Sheehan

2015 's first Ice Perch took a med/large shiner on a tip up .#4 hook through the lips .8fow.

  • John Sheehan

In a few weeks Belchers creek will have a Perch run from Greenwood Lake upstream to the dam at Pine cliff Lake

  • dick tabbert

Hope you hit the run OK John and clean house.

  • John Sheehan

Thanks Dick me too pal .Perch meal sounds good!

  • Jim Gronaw

We are finally seeing perch runs down here.

  • John Sheehan

Great Jim , yes its late compared to years past .

    .

  • John Sheehan

With 42 degree and 44 degree water temps ,I haven't seen the Perch yet .

  • John Sheehan

After a rain several 9-10" Aggressive Whites gathered by an inflow pipe and were caught on 32nd oz. Tabbert 'Jelly Jigs',tipped with crawler pieces.

  • dick tabbert

New species for the jelly jigs hope they keep catching for you John.

  • John Sheehan

    THEY DO !

  • Jim Gronaw

Spent some time with my boy Matt at Deep Creek Lake this week. Our best yellow perch was this splendid 14.5 inch Maryland Citation winner that hit my #3 Mepps in a shallow sun-warmed flat.

  • John Sheehan

    fantastic Perch Jim !!

  • John Sheehan

So glad to have learned this skinning technique :

  • John Sheehan

Same technique for Bullheads though I haven't tried it ,wonder if it works on pother fish .I imagine Walleyes can be skinned in this manner too. Anyone tried it on Bull heads or Walleyes?

  • John Sheehan

Got my 2nd Yellow Perch(11,1/2") while targeting Crappie with shiners ,drifting and trolling .The 2nd shot helped get it down closer to bottom .It was a cloudless day and though the sun is  at a low angle  in the sky in November ,I fished noon-2:30 .Prefer the 3-5 pm low light for the Crappie.

  • John Sheehan

13,1/4" on live shiner with 2 split shot ,trolling out at around 20' getting more Perch than usual while targeting Crappie which are generally between 20-10'.45 degree water

  • John Sheehan

  • John Sheehan

These fish were more like 26-30 feet deep .I hade the depth finder out today and my previous guess of 10-20' from a map was inaccurate

  • John Sheehan

only one Perch yesterday , very shallow weeds

  • John Sheehan

Me and Arty Cole caught three Perch that  hit his #4 Mepps spinner and my split shotted crawlers . Suspended and on bottom in what I'm guessing was 15' outside some weeds . Feel foolish leaving them but I wasn't prepared with a cooler and ice for keeping and we wanting to search for Bass and Pickerel .Next week I'd like to go back, with cooler and ice,  and see if I can locate the Perch ,Gills and other pannies with crawlers on bottom and slip floating .

  • John Sheehan

Welcome Arnie, look forward to your input .

  • John Sheehan

Hoping to figure out where the numbers of Perch are at the lake I've been fishing most at . This one came out of the tops of the weeds in 8 ' of water and slammed this thinfin right at the boat .
