Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I finally got out for a couple hours in the evening today. The wind was blowing something terrible today so i wasn't sure I was going to go.Sherry left for work and i tied a few jigs before deciding it was time to head out.I got to the lake and the white caps were rolling on the lake.I went back into a cove to get out of the wind, still breezy but not too bad.I was hoping to get into some crappies but no such luck.I tried a small twister and they didn't like that so i went to a small guinea jig with a single maggot.I moved further back into the cove and found a few gills. Not much size though, the first was decent and they got smaller. The peepers were driving me nuts they were so loud. There were a couple herons and an osprey flying around, that was pretty cool.My final count for the evening was 17.Here's a pic of the Red Ear i caught.
They are my favorites, love the colors and I think the fight harder.

Yup, was a good weekend here too ! Wife'n I were out friday for bluegills, Dad-n-law and friend went out saturday and got crappies. Am up getting ready for Church service, gotta give some thanks where its due ! steve b
Beautiful fish, Steve. I believe your 'red ear' is actually a prespawn male pumkinseed sunfish. The dead give-a-way is the wavey blue lines on the fishs' cheeks...redeare sunfish do not possess that coloring. Great fish!
Thanks Jim,I always called them pumpkinseeds before.I posted a pic on another forum and someone called them redears then someone else corrected him.We found a pond on some state gamelands that are loaded with the pumpkinseeds. We haven't caught any other gills besides the seeds and a bunch of crappies.

Nice lookin' fish!
Another great photo of another great pumpkinseed! That is truely a 'tropical' coloring of a very common sunfish specie. Well done!
Nice sunfish, are them pumpkin seeds or hybrids, ive been catching ones that look alot like them in a local pound
