Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Finally was able to try my hand at micro - fishing for bluegill this Friday. I used a 5 foot South Bend telescopic pole, 6 feet of one lb test, and a #20  dry fly (gnat). I was able to sight fish and managed to land about 12 bluegill in the 2-3 inch range. Those small fish on that thin pole was amazing. I hope to ramp down the size of the fly and maybe go for a smaller sized gill

This sounds great .It would be interesting to try in creeks .Have you ever cught Sculpins or madtoms this way ?Thanks for getting me thinkin about micro fishing!

Thank you for the reply

I have not done any fishing in creeks. Most of my fishing is done in very stressed county park ponds. Urban fishing at it's best.. Not uncommon to see 10+ people fishing a 3 acre pond. Everyone at the pond goes big. I figured why not follow the road less traveled. I'm amazed how hard it is to catch very small fish. You really need to scale everything down .

If you google micro fishing you would be suprised at the gear and the number of people fishing small. My goal is to be a micro bluegill specialist.

Can't see why the rig would not work in a creek. If I get a chance this summer, I'll try.

I love micro fishing! It often turns a bad day into a good one. I "fly" a size 24 hook with a 2foot leader of 1.8# fly tippet and a little red worm. Caught green sunfish and largemouth down to 3/4 inch.

Well my friend you would have the elusive one yen fish in Japan. I have been able to get down to about 1.25 inch over the last season

Great Job

Thanks, kept one as a trophy. The little green has nearly doubled in size since I plopped him in my tank. He's the one on the far left.
