Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

If you had 1 lure for bull gills , what would it be and why ? Mine would be a 1/16 oz Flu-Flu tipped with a small leech.

I've never fished much with artificials for bluegill, something I plan to change this year.

But when I have, I've had the best response with jigs, tipped with "swimmies" - grubs, twister tails and so on.

But does a Flu-Flu count, if it has a live leech on it?

1/16" round head tipped with a piece of red wiggler.
Wade's blades has a relatively new jig that I used last year, and proved completely dependable, called their " Horizontal minnow jig". Fished under a float, it was an exceptional producer with one of the company's wiggle tail plastics or a wax worm. HOWEVER, I've been experimenting with this colorful little jighead in a "tied form",patterning after a super trout fly that the British favor. Called a "minkie" ,it's a zonker style tie using mink fur strips- a quick wrap or pinning on the hook of a Horizontal minnow head and you have a buggy looking, leech like action in a small package! Results are outstanding thus far,but I'll keep everyone informed of future experiments-this may prove to be the ultimate bull gill artificial!

Couldnt find Horizontal minnow jig Wades Blades while searching on the net. Got a link John?

I also like tying black zonker strips on 32nd and smaller ball jigs.Bluegills do love them.

My brother and I did well one cold late March or early April day a few years ago up against a Rocky Cliff face adjacent to 20 ' of water .The Gills we caught all hit small black zonker stripped jigs.It was a tough day in the wind and had to back troll to keep us on the spot.

John , try this link ;  http://www.wadesblades.com/ .Great finish on these jigs!! But ,like you, for years I've done really well with black& natural colored rabbit zonkers strips on bluegills & everything else. Then ,last year, I started playing with mink strips -this hair is shorter cropped & is more bluegill friendly! It's action is similar to rabbit, but seems to swim with more total body action, rather than snake-like as rabbit, if this makes any sense?! You can get mink cheaply if you locate those now out-of-date mink stoles that the fashionable ladies used to wear!!
Thanks John . They do have nice finishes!

Good point David! I should also add that I also tip them with plastics.

I use horizontal micro jigs (1/64 oz.) under a Thill Mini Stealth float. Tip w/ Gulp or spikes, waxies... This rig excels for spawning shoreline gills.

Not a lure, but a fly. Use tan 2mm foam strips wrapped around a 3X #12 hook, rubber legs and a marabou tail. Drives the 'gills crazy during warm weather.

crickets you can't beat them.

I couldn't resist either - because the lure people come and slap down statements on the live bait - I just roll me big eyes in me big fat noggin!

Live bait is my go-to lure which attracts bluegills [ bluegill food ]

Here is why a Penny is good luck, I use a circle hook from gamakatsu that fits inside a Penny. Tipped with any live bait no bigger than 2" then add a small split shot cast out far as I can. Let it sink as I secure my rod in the holder, and wait for that "SOUTHBEND"  Can you tell im a live bait still drifter, a shiny copper penny, for a colorful copper nose bluegill. :)
