Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I need some help on fishing for Bluegills here in Minnesota.  I used to fish alot as a kid but never really paid attention to what we were doing (dad always knew where to go and what to use).  I'm mainly looking for help on depths the where they might be during the season.  Right now where would they be found.  How much would change in June, July and fall.  I have  kids who want to catch fish but usually end up seeing a frustrated dad instead, I'm afraid they will lose interest.  I grew up always using wax worms, is this still the go to here in Minnesota?

Hey Rick welcome aboard!... BBG is a great source for tips and tricks on catching the b.gill throughout the site.

I have been having great luck with the slip float and night crawler or Gulp Pink Waxies working the shallows in canals, little bays and cuts in 2 ft or less of water. Slip floating for gills is a great way to get kids hooked on fishing. Heck it is one of my favorite methods. I have success throughout the year in the shallows mostly and do some success out deeper drop shotting especially mid July throughout august. You could easily keep the kids busy fishing the slip/float most of the seasons.

Hey Rick I've been using the Trout Magnet split tail under their float and have been killing it. http://troutmagnet.com/trout-magnet/trout-magnet-kits.html

Thank You for the tips.  I'm going to try again this weekend.

Here in Michigan, 'gills are either pre-spawn, or spawning.  I'm of mixed emotions about fishing spawning fish.  Yeah, it puts fish in the boat, but it's WAY to easy to rape a resource and remove the big males from the system, resulting in stunted fish.

During the summer, I tend to fish custom-painted and custom-tied micro-jigs (I do my own), tipped with a waxworm, suspended under a slip-float drifting over weeds on flats.

RICK;;  FOR WHAT ITS WORTH BUDDY;; FISH;; THE POINTS OF LAND !! SOMETIMES;; REALLY CLOSE TO THE BANK;;;  IF NO CONNECTION;; TRY DEEPER;; ON THE BOTTOM !  USUALLY;; ABOUT 20;; TO 3O FEET OUT....  MAIN THING IS;;  TAKING THE KIDS FISHING; AND MAKING IT A KIDS DAY !!
