Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I may have discovered something new to tip your jigs with by accident. As yall know, I like to cook , and my wife brought home some white fish a friend had given her from her freezer,  well when I thawed it out it was not  white fish, it was the little rings  of a off white circles which  looked like spaghetti-o's. After further inspection I determined that this seafood was something  which is called calamari ,  a squid by any other name, and I said "  What the Hell " I'll cook some in Tempura batter, I have never tried squid before any I dont think it would taste any better than being fried in tempura batter.  That was the Best fried fish bait I have ever tasted, and I'm done , I dont have to taste any more. Now what to do with the rest of this  in the freezer, and I have decided if you take these little sphincters looking rings and make a cut in them so they would lie flat  ,you can take them and tip them on your jig and they would flutter just like a pork strip  on a hook and since they are rubbery they would stay on the hook , and since they are made out of squid they would add a fishy smell to your bait . So all there is left to do is a little Field Research  on maybe the best  hook tipper of all times. LOFR

I believe you might have something there LOFR .Problem is I like the taste of Fried Calamari .Sometimes its a bit too chewy though . Worth a shot as a spoon tipping agent though !

you mean its better than a blue gill?  and that stuff might be better than crickets??

Carl , nothing is better than crickets, and if you tip with a cricket  you really dont need the jig, but this calamari stuff would look good on a spoon or a jig as some kind of flowing tasty snack on the back of some flash.  LOFR

lofr -i think it will work, they use it for salmon and trout in lake michigan.we use raw shrimp for lake perch.i think fish are all about the protein .even if it,s something don,t see eveyday.earth worms waxies and maggots are something they only get to  eat if they get washed  or blown in.and yeah its rubbery.

I 've used squid for bait when surf fishing in the Gulf. It stayed on the hook better than shrimp and seemed catch as many fish.

I don't think I could use good calamari as bait! I use squid for sturgeon and that is hard enough...squid tentacles would probably look like a nice little dancing tail.

I've tried using pickled herring as bait too...the only thing they baited was me.

My wife always gets upset when I use Shrimp for bait.  "We could eat that!", she says.  Calamari, on the other hand.....Honestly, I could take it or leave it.  Tastes like egg whites to me, with a seasoned breading, and a good marinara.....meh.  SWMBO would probably get all upset that I spent that kind of money on "bait"........

I've been thinking a lot about bait tippings lately... you may have something there.

Tippings? Is that a word.?

Like how to make shrimp tougher to stay on the hook. Calamari solves that problem doesn't it. Tough fishy bait

A guy I know nets some squid in Bogue Sound during the warmer months, so we have them here, though I haven't run across them when netting shrimp. If I can find them, I might have to net a few in the sound late summer and try that.

As long as you are looking in the kitchen for jig tipping material, try chicken skin. Cut it into tiny strips.

Try hot dogs. I've used them for years and they work great . Just a quick question, why tip an artificial. I thought the goal was to catch on a man made lure, none fly.

Most fishing breaks down to three area
