Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Tried a little experiment today and used my tenkara rod to bait fish. I used my Fountainhead Caddis Rod with 4# test line and a # 8 Tru Turn gold aberdeen hook. My method of casting was to  use an underhand swing method.  My bait of choice was a dollar store smoke sausage.  I was able to cast pretty accurate within a 20 foot radius. Depth was obtained by either raising or lowering the pole. I used colored bobber stops as indicators to follow the line.

Today was a many day and the fish averaged about 7 -8 inches. The takes were great since the pole is so light. The different between this method and a telescopic pole is night and day. The Caddis Pole is 2.8 oz total and I was able to fish for three hours with no strain.

Given the choice between the Mr Crappie 9 foot pole and the Caddis , the Caddis is a winner hands down for fixed line bait fishing.

The only thing I can say is welcome to the dark side. I started tenkara fishing about 2 years ago and it's the most fun I ever had fishing. I did find out that bait fishing with a tenkara type pole is called Keiryu fishing. The method is exactly like tenkara and the poles are very much alike.

I would recommend the Fountainhead Caddis as a good entry level rod. All in would be about $55.00.

Have fun
