Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Most all of my fishing is done with spinning tackle. Often I get to take others- grandkids, friends etc, who really don't like using the spinning tackle. If any members use spincasting gear what reels do you favor for 4-6 lb line  (light to UL rod). Just want to get a few to have for when the situation arises.

Thanks Doug.

The Cetina does look nice. Its list of features is impressive:

  • 4 ball bearings
  • 1-way clutch instant anti-reverse bearing
  • Quick release spool design
  • Aluminum frame with machined aluminum front cone
  • Smooth carbon fiber drag system
  • Heavy-duty metal gears
  • Spare aluminum spool
  • Pre-spooled with line

It sounds much like the reels of old. I've always wondered why a quick release spool cannot be incorporated into spincast reels and the Cetina Pflueger has it. At $50, it may not fit everyone's budget. But I'd like to check one out some day.

If someone asked me what my one favorite spincast reel is, I would answer the Zebco 606 (older metal style), or the Johnson Crappie Pro.

I know - that's two. LOL

Cetina was the reel that I describe above, that literally fell apart into several pieces on just its second trip.  So, buyer beware.

the last zebco 33s and 11's  that i bought a few years ago, line was wrapped around the spindle on the inside of the spool, making it mess up. so if you're having problems with one right off the bat i would check that out.

my conversion to using spinning reels happened as i was using my 33's and 11's every day, while my friend was using his spinning rod, and i saw the amount of problems i was having as opposed to successful casts he was having and i was being blown out of the water, so i bought a spinning rod and haven't looked back haha.

David I have two of them but my son stole the handles off them!!  Great reel.

Hi I useshakespeare underspin reels only. I tried using open face ultr light reels but found that if it was windy the line woud blow behind the spool and you know what a problem that is . I also use 4 and one half foot rods. Joe koski

I have one Shakepeare U/L trigger spin. I bought it a local department store, for $13 as I recall.

It is one of my favorite reels, smooth and pretty reliable. Recently, I had to replace the spring on the pickup pin. I just made one from a guitar string. But the reel itself is nice, overall.
