Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Hi, I am new to the area, but grew up fishing forr bluegill in the coastal plains of South Carolina. It appears that bluegill fishing isn't done by many in this area, or I just don't know where to look for info on where to go. Also, if there is anyone out there that has knowledge of where one could buy live crickets, except at pet stores where the price is outrageous, I'd love to know.

thanks,

Palmetto

What part of South Central Texas are you in? I'm right in the middle, south of Austin, east of San Antonio. There are quite a few giller's in the San Antonio to San Marcos area. I think crickets are available at a store just before the entrance to Calaveras Lake.

thanks Bill, I'll check out the area near Calaveras. I now live very near Startsville.  Have you ever ventured down to Choke Canyon in search of bream?

Ray

No on the bream, I go bass fishing there
Aiken, SC, here

Man, no crickets. That would seriously suck. Here in the South (as opposed to the "kinda South" in Texas), crickets are a way of life. I hope you find some - if push comes to shove you can buy them on the internet and raise them yourself. Maybe you can start a niche business, since you may be the only one around raising the things.

And Im thinking I've heard your name before - are you famous?

If you are asking me if I'm famous, no, maybe a little infamous around political circles in South Texas.  I saw on another message board where a guy ordered the crickets, and as soon as they arrived, he divided them up and froze them. Said they worked just as well as live, and were a lot easier to put on a hook.

It does suck david! I found a bait shop near here that sold them up until last year. Just not many people out here that want to chase bream.....which can be good for someone looking to go after a "not so fished for fish", but bad when it comes to getting the bait and supplies. The main focus is bass, crappie, whites, stripers and cats. I have been on the net looking at the possibility of getting some and raising them as you suggest. Hopefully I will need them for the bream instead of selling them!!!!

As far as the name, you mean Palmetto? Well, you can take theman out of SC, but you can't take the SC out of the man!!

thanks,

Ray

Inman, SC - of course!

As for crickets, I have seen preserved ones in cellophane; presumably they are dried?

And I hadnt thought of freezing them. I always end up with some left over after fishing, so im gonna try that.

I know pet stores sell them as feed for reptiles. They tend to be more expensive than "bait" crickets, as far as I know.

I hadn't thought of freezing them either! If I order 1000, I can get them for about 45, which includes shipping, I just may have to do that.

Yep, I had forgotten, there is an Inman SC!!! I'm from a little town near Myrtle Beach called Loris.
petco and petmark is where I've found them near Houston
They do have them at pet stores here, but sell out fast as they do not carry many at a time. Not to mention they are 11 bucks a hundred. I found a place in Georgia that can ship them to me for about 4.50 a hundred, but for that price I'd  have to buy a 1000. Which still isn't a bad deal, but I can't use that many and just don't want to kill of let loose in the wild here those that I don't use.
You could also try catching your own. Look in the "how to" group. Then check out how to catch crickets

we have a few wild black ones here, but it would just take to long to get 200 of them.

thanks
