Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

When fishing for Bluegill (and crappie) with jigs you often find them hanging out in heavy cover like brush, weeds, timber and so on. This is especially so for the bigger ones. Hang ups in these places are inevitable. If you don't simply break off when you snag this stuff, then you are liable to shake it around so much trying to get un-snagged that you spook the fish. A snagless jig is what is wanted. So here's how to make one.

Bend the hook of your jig head down at about a 20 degree angle from normal position. Next, thread on a soft plastic grub as normal, right up on the jigs collar.

Finally, push the body of the grub down over the barbed end of the hook.  This should bury the hook point, so it is just barely exposed on the top side of the grub body.

BTW, this was found in "300 Tips and Tricks For Freshwater Fishing."

Great book.

Who wrote that book David? Sounds good I think Derrick mentioned that book on the Fishing Library group page.

Officially it is titled:

  • "Fishing Tips and Tricks: Over 300 Guide-Tested Tips for Catching More and Bigger Fish" (The Freshwater Angler, Creative Publishing international, September 27, 1990)

Here's the blurb from Amazon.com:

"Authors Greg Breining and Dick Sternberg spend a lot of time fishing and have collected many of these tips on their own. Others are from professional anglers. Some are specific to certain fish, others good across the board. This book is an excellent resource for beginners as well as those who've fished for many years..."

But dont buy it new - do a search for used copies. There are a lot of them out there. I got mine for $0.99 and $3.00 shipping.
