if you have a smart phone there is a Navionic Boat Usa  app that has most lakes mapped that can be downloaded. i really like it... shows the boat launches... comes in handy for me.

here is a screen dump of Portage Lake in your neighborhood... does not tie in with GPS though... wish it would

do you have a home lake picked out yet?

I've thought about using my phone more for fishing apps and such.  Unfortunately, right now, my phone is at about the max I can do with it; it only has 1.83 GB of space on the phone, and I only have about 100 MB of available space.  Freaking Google keeps updating and getting bigger, and bigger.......kind of like Windows.

I'll probably have to get a new phone with more space on the phone so I can download and use different apps.

I haven't decided on a home lake, yet.  Vandercook is only about a mile away.  The Michigan Center chain is about 5 - 6 miles away.  Gillette's is a few miles beyond that.

Thanks for the map of Portage, but I think that's the Portage Lake in Washtenaw County.  I'm pretty sure the Huron River doesn't flow through Jackson County.

yeah the map upload was 130 mb alone.

i did a Master Angler Database search for B'Gill waters in Jackson County and it appeared... i fished it a few times mainly for LMB and crappie and have surprisingly well. i picked that lake just to show an example of what the app looked like. if and when you do a phone upgrade it might be worth a look.

20151125....  skim ice on the protected coves

I saw skim ice on a couple ponds on my way to work yesterday.  I have not had a chance to check any of my local lakes for ice.

20151125-water temp 36 degs @ shore

I did a little driving today while I was "on the way" to work.  The only BOW of that ice were ponds that were about 2 acres or less in size.  Anything bigger than that was completely open water.  I didn't have time to get a water temp.

I did see a wild Turkey strutting through someone's front yard.  I thought that was kind of cool.

looking at the long range forecast ... im thinking no safe ice thru december

That's what my co-workers are telling me.

It's an El Nino year.  What does that do to the weather patterns up here?  Colder than usual?  Warmer than usual?  More or less precipitation?

i heard this one was going to produce more intermittent warm days and a bit more precipitation. last year it started snowing in November and most stayed till march... a bitter, bitter winter.
