Well now, since you mentioned the Great White Bluegill hunt, that my good friend is exactly what I plan on doing this new year.  I am planning on catching the world record Bluegill!   I know that sounds a little nuts, because we all want to catch that fish, but the lake I fish has that bad boy (or girl?)  in it.  I am very fortunate to have a fantastic big Bluegill lake very close to me.  Actually one of the nations best for huge Bluegill- Southern California's Lake Perris.  There are several other guys here on BigBluegill that are also LP regulars and top notch Bluegill anglers that are also fishing for that very special white whale of a fish, and they too agree that the WR Bluegill could be there.  I know it's more of a dream, but I have to think positive and use methods that are slightly different than what others are doing.  Fish in areas where giants have been caught.  Who knows..

Jeff , if the movie had any hints for the big one it was "It would be near the bikinis in April" Good luck , I'll be chasing him over here.  LOFR

Canoe fishing from a guide canoe.

Scruff, if you dont have a canoe yet check out Old Town's  sport model, It can handle  5 hp motor, if I had to replace mine that what I would get. Here is a photo of my canoe with a buddy of mine who comes and floats the Strawberry River. I drop him off upstream and he floats back to the Crappy Cabin . LOFR

Only trip thus far for me is next week, in Illinois. I don't stray from my home waters very often anymore, so don't fish many other places.

Thanks, Loafer.

I was planning to get an Old Town Guide/Discover 119 - a solo canoe. I want a 12 footer so I can single hand the thing on and off the truck and generally for the ease of use. Its a poor mans version of the hybrid can-yaks, like the Native Watercraft, 'Ultimate'.

There is a small sacrifice in stability, but on all other accounts I think it will work fine. Ive used canoes in the past, long before fishing yaks appeared. So, Im familiar with them. Also, there are many modifications being done to these to help with the stability and to outfit them for fishing. Like many of these mods, the basic craft serves as a basis or greater things to come.

Just your basic electric troll motors make these canoes turn into terrific fishing platforms, mount the batteries and coolers up front to balance  the load, and dont forget seat backs, I have my eye on a couple at Academy. LOFR

Seen em. I've thought about the stern mount trolling motor set up - it beats paddling when you don't wanna.

But I'm a simple minimalist. I want to slide the 'noe from the truck bed directly into the water and climb in. Gear already stowed, ready to go. I don't go farther than a few hundred yards as a rule, maybe 300 and catch all the fish I care to. Or, I will have had all the fun I want for the session. After a few hours I pull out, set up my camp chair on shore and have a bite. Sometimes, I'll take a little snooze. Im pretty low key.

The only battery I envision is a small one to power a fish finder. If I had the money I'd get a Chupacabra or Nu'canoe. Without it, well... this is a next best alternative.

Back in the very early 70's I saw a guy that was fishing out of a canoe with a homemade stabilizer a and it worked great. He was able to move freely about his canoe and not worry about tipping it over.

Id sure like to see that

I had planned- last year on a few float trips with some of my old work buddies;;  going on the caney fork river- that trip would take at least 7 days-- plenty of walleye, gills, rainbow trout. the to reelfoot lake-- stay a few days there- they have big gills and crappie!!  then later float hurricane mills creek-- real good trout; and some real good gills there to-- maybe listen to some picking and grinning country music there. all of that is in Tn.  last year was a real bad year for me- so im just hoping this year is better!!   if you like country music- check out hurricane mills in Tn!!

CEDAR LAKE, Government shut down had it closed last year when I went!!!!!! HAPPY NEW YEAR YOUR LORDSHIP!!!!!!!
