Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Fly Fishing for Bluegills...WITH A SPINNING ROD & REEL!

Hit my local pond in northern NJ today around 5pm today...it was 91 degrees out, which is unusually warm for April, and I figured that the fish would be biting like mad!

I used my new found talent tying the uni-knot to create two droppers.

The first dropper had a small mr. twister grub on a #10 hook and the second dropper towards the bottom had a small nymph that I bought at an outdoor store, that was recommended to me by the clerk at the fly fishing counter. A foot under the nymph dropper was a split shot so that I could cast this with a spinning rod. The rig sorta looked like this:

The funny thing was that most of the other anglers on the lake were getting skunked. However, over the course of a half hour, I caught a dozen bluegills on the nymph.  Here is a picture of my first bluegill caught on a fly:

No bites on the grub, which I attribute to a short dropper line...it was about 4 inches...it really needed to be about a foot long.

Sadly, I lost the nymph to a bad cast by a bush :-( Gotta go buy another one...at this rate, I might need to take up fly tying!

So, my question to you is this:  What other ways are there to rig flies on spinning tackle? Has anyone else had similar success?

Might try a bobber, That will give you the weight to cast it and suspend your flies at the depth you want.
Hey Ubu...check out my blog from last season on 'Tail-Gunner Tactics' for shallow gills...you would be casting a fly by using a small crankbait as a bobber and a weight.
