Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Hey guys and gals, I finally found a little pond about 5 minutes from my home that is the only open water lake I could locate within 25 miles of my house. Heck, it got all the way up to 42 degrees today so I thought, sheeesh, why not give it a try?

So, armed with little more than a hope and a prayer, I went there just to say I went fishing. On my second cast, I actually hooked a fish that felt pretty good but the hook pulled out and I never saw it. I was using a 1/124 oz thread-bodied hairjig, black with a pink head and tipped with a wax worm. I fished it 5 ft below a small plastic bobber near the deepest portion of the pond.

I know it's not a lot to write home about, but I'm writing about it anyway! I had 3 strikes in the 40 minutes I was there and caught one small bluegill...my first of the year!! I feel as though I really accomplished something with all the other waters froze with soft ice and the water temp was 37 F.

Wow...if we could only get a break in the weather and get all the ice off these lakes...I think I could get some fish! Anyway, I'm happy...and I didn't get skunked!

That is a lovely gill Jim, He is big for his age. What is all that white stuff around the pond ? Seems like this winter is 2 seasons long. But spring is coming.
Thats a perty hawk flyin around that pond. Is this a cementary?
Yes, it is a small roadside pond at a church cemetary about 1 mile from the house. Supposed to have big crappies in it.....?
