I'm from New Jersey but I'm guessing Crappie can be found now around Wood cover near a steep bank .Willow trees and other trees hanging over the water can offer the cover and food they desire.

California delta? I fish there without a boat, too. Hope to have one someday, most of the delta water is inaccessible without one. I usually fish for bluegill, have only caught crappie a couple times by accident and really know nothing about catching them, but they tasted great. Certainly open to catching more :) Maybe we can fish together sometime. Private message me if you want to exchange info.

 

Last time I was there,  a few weeks ago, I caught some bluegill in the slough by Clifton Court Forebay. Nothing to brag about size-wise, but enough of them to make a dinner.
