Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

This is my first try at beginning a thread here, so I hope I'm doing it right.

I have read several people's comments about adding a piece of live bait to a jig. Such as putting a cricket on a jig. My question is, "Is that better than putting a cricket on a bare hook?"

Also, is there a pattern database here somewhere where I can see pictures of jigs and read the materials list or a step-by-step of how to tie that particular pattern?

Are there any "Swaps" going on here where, say, a dozen guys send a set of a dozen flies to a "host" who sends back everyone one each of all the other jigs submitted? That way you send in 12 of the same pattern and get back 12 different patterns.

Or instead of that, would any of you guys who fly fish be willing to send me 3 or 4 jigs and let me send you 3 or 4 flies that are good bluegill flies?

Thanks

Don't get me started!  A Muddler tied on a 3xl curved-shank hook, size 12, has caught a LOT of all sizes of 'gills for me this year!

Randell;; usually we have a kind of a swap around December;;  depends on how many guys willing to swap some of their stuff.  be sure to check out Jeffery Abnethy;s pix!!!  king of the jigs on blue gills!!

Another 'yes' vote for the Gulp minnows. Looked for another jar of Emerald Shiners yesterday.

have to check that out johnny.red is a proven attraction all on its own.think red beads ,red hooks, red spots aka hot spots on flies and lures.anise oil, licorice i believe is made from it,is a centuries old fish attractant.wont comment on GULP as myself and a couple members nearly got booted off here years ago with the famous GULP WAXIES discussion that got way out of hand.glad to see the gapen co is still in the game.what happened to his tv show?

Well - just stick to the positive - people should make up the own mind without any loudness.

You can also purchase anise based attractant in a spray bottle.

i want to say somebody makes plastics with anise scent built in.uncle josh used to have, maybe still do, little tiny pork rind baits in the jar.a variety of little strips and wedges in different colors all in a jar like the pork frogs.they were tuff little baits and the little fish couldn't tear them off on the way down.had a lot of problems not getting to the deeper more cautious gills this year.i could see them below the swarm of little ones just could not get the bait or fly in their zone

Did you try fishing heavy, Jim? I know.....another shameless plug for tungsten....smaller size, gets down through the bait stealers quicker than lead.

a lot of my flies have tungsten beads tony.nah the little ones were like piranhas .they would hold above the cover and just attck in numbers,i could see the larger gills down in the cover but the little ones would just keep pummeling it all the way down.i am a big fan of tungsten i probably have a couple hundred beads of various sizes and colorsi showed a few variations of a bead head fly i use alot and a way to make a tungy head jig with a bead a brass straight pin and a jig hook.gonna mess with tungsten powder and light cure resin and some glow powder to make some ice flies and spoons.been researching it some.my son has a great place to ice fish so might get back into it.

Had to dig back through your photos to find this Jim, missed it the first time around.... keep us in the loop regarding your future endeavors with the powder and resin, please!

will do tony.gonna have to get a good scale and the powder is not cheap.gonna hit a golf club place.i hear they use it on clubs.its a good place to get lead tape.the t powder is kind of pricey as a flytying material.the uv resins are getting better and cheaper all the time.just got too many projects.finally got flies tied for a charity thing.will be getting into this before the holidays tho.

lce fishing!
Is sure like
To go!
