Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Here is a very intresting fish we have here in Northern Minnesota. Not lakes have them but, the ones that do...they are a lot of fun! They get big as well. Our state record burbot is 19 lbs 9 oz or so!

I've seen them called fresh water cod, too, in addition to 'eelpout.' They are highly prized in Scandinavia and Russia. Some people refer to them as 'poor mans lobster.' They poach their flesh in milk and serve it with drawn butter.

They are also highly predatory and voracious, feeding savagely on fish and fish eggs. They are known to take lures too big for them to even eat! In that way Jeff, is right - they remind me of bowfin.

I recall reading that Utah, when they were discovered in their waters, issued an immediate kill-on-sight order for them. It is felt the burbot will destroy the trout fisheries, and so hurt their tourist economy.

Interesting i see you did not eat them there is a fellow that was in Alaska  that tells how good they are as table fare.   He refers to them as fresh water cod.    We have a few here in lake champlain
