Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

1700 8/26 evening/night trip 74° light breeze dropped down into the mid 60's brrrr

Howdy Y’all

Another evening and night trip to Norfork 1700 we started working the opposite bank of one of the back coves. Working both gill lines and cat rigs we set up to work this new side.

The wife was separate from me and as she walked back to her poles due to bobber problems that cased a change of gear (yes here comes the fish story) she found her cat pole on the ground from her rock holder.

She had cast out about 10’ of line with a 5’ set for depth and she called over that the bobber was down.

When I arrived there was a good 40’ of line out with no bobber showing and the pole had a fine bow in it (10 lb Zebco line with a #10 snap and 1 oz of weight and a #6 Eagle Claw treble hook with strawberry and garlic hotdog chunk) and she was making up line fairly well with drag being taken after 3 to 4 take up reels.

I moved in front toward shore and was waiting with the net. She had gotten back 15’ of the 40’

(she believes that the reel was free spooled after she set the rock holder together) and the bow was better with some nice bobs and shakes added. This beast stayed on the bottom and no bobber was visible the depth ran from 3’ at the shore and shoaled off at 5’ to the drop to 6’ to 7’ depending on where you were then ran deeper as you went out. Where the line showed the depth was probably 15’ to 20’ as she made up another 5’ the beast turned and popped the line with a shake of the head 3’ below the bobber, never saw it nor did we see any boils just a steady pull then pop. So we’ve re-spooled with 25 lb test (we needed a bigger boat).

As the evening progressed she worked the rip rap corner and pulled in that nice 8 ½” ½ lb F Green Sunfish

And a nice 8” BG just a bit later , where I was I pulled in a pair of 7” yellow bellies but one was hooked deep and passed away so I had to perform hook surgery at the house to get it back.

As night came on we moved over to the other shore due to it being less rocky and easier to work and walk at night.

We applied our light sticks and started working the dam and I was along the shore.

She had to put more clothes on due to the temp drop after sundown and donned her Bass Cat (Here Kitty)

t-shirt, after that she hooked into the nice little Channel cat we worked the pole and net team well and brought the sucker in. No other action occurred and the temp kept dropping so to home and warmth we went.

Enjoy the pictures and really enjoy the cooler streak and fish your areas.

Yours in service

James and Kathy
