Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I have been in SC for 2 years now and this year I have been able to fish as much as I like to...well almost. Brim have been the most consistant catch for me. I think I have found a great lil honey hole too.

Warmouth are fish I catch often now. I dont specificaly target them but I try to raise the odds. Here is what I have learned about this lil work horse.

They love structure, they will move into rootballs and anything snaggy. The thicker the structure the better. I fish a creek here in Sumter SC that is full of blowdowns, logs, and undercut banks with exposed roots and stumps. I do best fishing snags that are in or close to deep water...by deep I mean deeper than the average. The creek runs between 2 and 3 ft deep but there are pockets under and behind the logs and blowdowns that get doen to 9 ft.

I drop crickets and worms as close to if not into the cover. I count on losing a lot of tackel. I do use a slip float and start shallow. I will allow the bait to drift along the target area a couple times than go deeper. doing this lets me cover the area really well.

I also catch um on the rip-rap under the bridge where I put in.

I get a few of them on black/yellow/red bettle spins but have not tried any other baits yet.

They act a lot like a grouper, they like to find a hole and hide in it to ambush prey.

I've caught all of my warmouth from beneath the tangles and cut banks along the South Edisto River around Aiken, SC. Right to the bank and the more tangled, the better. My avatar pic is me holding one of those little black water beauties. Your tactics sound about the same as mine.
