Down here in the SE Wi the gills have moved to their deep summer patterns.Depending on the lake we can find them anywhere from 20 to 40 fow plus. Are better lakes like Geneva and Delavan will produce some gills up to 10 or more inches. Was out once this week and the girlfreind managed to hook up with a few of them while I got the skunko.Go figure, anyways, was fun watching her catch them.Haven't had the chance to make it up north, due to our slow economy but maybe next year.Normally, I am chasing Lake Michigan perch, but its almost time for them to move out from shore, and disappear til next year, but I will catch a few more of them before they leave.Good luck keep a tight line.

I just wanted to give a little update on my little b-gill fishing outing on Vermilion in Northern, Mn. I know some of you in this group have a fishing connection there.
I finally stole away for a few hours to fish for some gills. I have been having some trouble finding them the brief moments I have had to try. After some asking around and some map studying I identified Stunz bay in the SE section of Verm. just north of Tower as a potential gill spot. I started on the E. side of the bay in about 3-4' of water on the edge of emerging weeds and got bit right away. It was very releving to finally find some as I was getting frustrated over not catching any in previous efforts. I didn't average big ones but it was a good start in Identifying what kind of habitat they like in this lake. The biggest was 8.5" that I caught next to one of the boat houses and all the rest were 7" and under which I got in the weeds.
Who said finding B-gill was easy!! Any way I thought I would pass the info on in hopes one of you would share some other area where they may be or for you to try Stunz bay. Would love some feed back if you do. Thanks.

Do you use this fly for smallies? Can you share the name of the fly? Do you fish it in rivers, lakes, both?
Questions, questions, questions........

Thanks for the update Doug. I am sorry your b-gill year is starting out slow. Mine hasn't been steller, but solid. We have had a very cool spring up here so the water temps are still in the low 60's (tomorrow is suppose to be rainy and in the 40's..ugh). That has kept the pan fish scatterd but active. I have found some good 9"ers but nothing bigger than that so far. I have a few trips planned this week with some friends and family so I will know more of what the panfish are doing soon. I know it will be a late spawn for us this year....maybe July? That is ok though because prespawn is a very active time and the slow warm up just prolongs that period.

I see we have some new Mn groupies, welcome! Lets start getting some good Mn chatter going. We love our gills but we can talk about anything that is on our mind. The group chatter has been idle too long.

For those of you that were interested in Vermilion, I was up there on thur. all day fishing for walleyes with my father inlaw. The water temp stayed around 49-51 degrees. That was in Pike bay, there was no reason to go anywhere else cause we caught fish all day. All were 12"-17".
I was up there last year the first weekend of june and the temps were still in the upper 50's. So I don't think you will see any blue gill spawners till late June at the earliest. I hope to get up there some time around then and try to find them. Hope you all are having a good spring with lots of Gills.

I think the fishcats are the best. if you are a bigger guy, they make a bigger tube , the fat cat.

I went out for the maiden voyage for my semi new fishcat, I have dubbed the great pumpkin, cuz it is so big round and orange.
Andy SBF came out to try some tube fishin, i let him use my ol cat, which held him up great despite being over the size limit!
We got our sunfish on t.h.e. Jig tipped with gulp waxies, i also got fish on a JRs black and chartruse stub grub. The tiny bass and shiners followed me all around. I couldn't keep em off my baits, but we got some nice sunfish just about everywhere we tried. the crappies were in hiding or wouldn't bite, I got a couple.
All in all a fun day. I had fun just having my camers ready for some funny video of Andys first tubing adventure, but he did pretty good for a tube wookie!

Must be nice to have ice out down there. I think we still have a good 10 days to a week to be able to have some open water. That nice weather can't come soon enought.
