We live about ten minutes from Lay Lake and have good access to a public use area that sees little use during the week. This fall and winter I plan to slip down there for a hour or two on a regular basis to do a little gilling. No boat so I am limited to the shore and pier.
My question is what to have in my fly box? What do Bama gills like during the cooler periods of the year? Any good tactics I should know about?
Think slow Scott. As the water gets colder, a fishes motabilism slows down. Try all colors, at all depths. Watch your cloud cover to dicdate what colors to use. Know that fish will move to deeper water as water tempertures cool. Try the deepest spots you can during cold weather.
Good luck.
