Great isn't it Jim! what are you fishing for?

20150906- ...------<")))))><(

So today started out with the intention of just getting out in the kayak and start mapping some areas of Wixom Lake that are basically uncharted. I brought along a slip bobber spinning rigs and (2) UL jigging rigs to identify schools of fish if any were spotted. My first step in any mapping project is do a perimeter of the shoreline getting as close as possible then methodically fill in the middle areas with separate sonar logs.

Spotted an area along the shore that looked very similar to the skinny slop water ive been fishing all summer long but denser. Cast the slip bobber against the shoreline edge and picked up a (7) class and an (8) inch class B’Gill. There was a pause in the action, I set a waypoint and then continued on. Found an area of shore line that dropped off to 10 FOW quickly that was clear of weeds but filled with crappie. Caught many sub 10” crappies on pink and white vmc Marabou Jig… then set the hook into a heavy crappie with a good fight bringing it along the side of the kayak I estimated at over 16” easy.. hook shook free as soon as its head was out of the water. I could’ve fit my beer can easily into that circumference. Lost the jig on a toothy critter a few casts later. Marked a waypoint… I know where she lives. Ill be back.

Finished the mapping and called it a semi successful outing. Found some great structure as well as schools of fish. also got started on the sonar log and contour map

20150906-WIXOM LAKE EXPLORING AND FISHING

20150906-deeper weed slop produced a couple B'Gills... i believe given enough time i could of picked this area apart and got more...B'Gills and weeds!

showing progress on the area north of the bridge...

here is a snap of the area of the lake everyone is used to seeing... the main river channel of the lake is not even close...

i thought one of the safest places to be on the lake with a kayak or any small craft was in the "SLOW NO WAKE" zones. things have changed on my lake. the drunks and amateurs were out in full force last night. i caught my trip short last night for safety reasons. just  a reminder for everybody... BE SAFE and enjoy the rest of your Holiday!

20150907- so the mapping continues… started logging a sonar session parallel but just offset from yesterdays paths to fill in the blanks with sonar data. Stopped at the area where the crappie bite was on and picked up a few… slip bobbered and drop shotted for B’Gill but struck out. Just Rock Bass jr. and some decent mid sized yellow perch on the Gulp Waxie. Hooked up with the nice SMB on the (2) in Berkley Power Minnow pitching the wood for crappies… awesome… awesome fight. What an aerial display then the dog down in the grass. The B’Gill still continue to frustrate. Heard a woman fishing from the campground dock hooking up with some gill… she was fishing over an expansive 3 ft avg weedy flat. May try that tomorrow.

I caught many crappie up to (11) in where I lost the monster yesterday. All CPR'ed

20150907-WIXOM LAKE

20150907- 18” CLASS SMB- I had a great time catching this fish… while casting parallel to a laydown extending from the bank and dropping into 7.5 FOW with a (2) inch Berkley Power Minnow on a 5-0 ft UL with 2# braid I hooked into something solid. Setting the hook projected this beast thru the surface of the water with multiple leaps. As the fight with the tiny spinning rig wore on the fish started to dive towards the bottom… the final lunge left the SMB adhering to the bottom… the stalemate lasted for a couple minutes. Alternating slack and tight lines did not move her. I reached tfor the 6-0 ft paddle and poked it towards the bottom… that did the trick! The fight continued. I noticed my net has floated out of reach and I had to lip lock her. What a magnificent fish! After her successful measurement pictures and release I noticed the clumps of grass that were sheared with the 2# braid… strong stuff!
