Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Does the type of Float/Bobber you use matter when fishing for Bluegill?

I have personal preferences but I was wandering if anyone else gives it much consideration. I prefer a small/tapered bobber to support accurate casting in tight locations. I put a couple photos with my favorite and a third photo with my dad's favorite, a long skinny orange and white.

Not so much on the style but prefer some of the longer THILLs. See it more in terms of balancing it right with the correct amount of lead. Usually if a fish even exhales near it I want to know, sometimes bruisers will hit so light that if it isn't really sensitive you'll miss them. If they're smashing it, it doesn't matter
I really like the gapen balsa slip floats.....but they are a little pricey...check out the web site...http://http://www.gapen.com/product_p/float-panfish.htm..  they are the most sensative bobber/floats that I can find.
Please repost this link doesn't work.

I use the smallest, sleekest models that I can find at a reasonable price. Before I found bigbluegill.com I never realized it might make a difference.

After reading some bobber style posts here last season, I changed from the basic round model and it really paid off for me.

iF YOU WANT A REAL THRILL, USE A PORCUPINE QUILL!        LOFR
I like to use a weighted torpedo shaped float for better casting but my girlfriend uses a big fat plastic bobber and she sometimes outfishes me
I started making my own from used wine corks I got from a winery. I turn them down and use a bamboo skewer for  the long center stick . Some I just drill a hole and peg them. You can experiment with shapes and sizes. I leave mine natural so they look like piece of wood floating on the water. I dont know if bright colors frighten fish or not.  I will add pictures to my page soon.
How do you "turn them down?"
I use a threaded drill chuck that screws onto my bench grinder. I drill a 1/8 in. hole as close to center of the cork as possible. I insert a 12p nail through the hole then put the exposed end of the nail into the jaws of the chuck and tighten down.  I use a mill rasp for the rough work, then a file to shape, then sand paper to finish. You could use a drill press if you sped it up, it would vertical in stead of horizontal. I dont have a lathe but i imagine a small pen lathe would work nicely.
These are some of the ones I made. It's fun using something you made to catch fish.  It fills some of the cold rainy days with a fish related activity.
