Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

So with Spring upon us and waters warming, the panfish are becoming more active, this is my first year of tying custom jigs for crappie, bluegill ect ect. I've been mainly focusing on crappie jigs but also do some trout jigs, I'm always happy to learn new patterns, color combo's, productive jigs ect. So I figured I would make a thread all about these jigs and maybe I can learn a thing or two from you pros.

Just to start off here are some of mine,

These are my general formats, normally some rubber strands/legs for the tail material and either chenille or dubbing for the body, I make my own dubbing so I can get just about any color I want but green and pink are what I have been using mainly....I want to get some more colors of ultra chenille for the worm jigs though.

So lets see some jigs. :)

I don't normally fish in low light conditions since fishing at night is illegal in my state but I do like to spend as much time on the water as I can which means being out at sunset at times...I probably won't tie very many in glow in the dark, I just think it would be something cool to experiment with, my dad found some glow in the dark nail polish at the dollar store so I am not into it very much money. lol

Can't fish at night?  That sucks!!!

I wouldn't know since I have never tried it....I also have to pay like 15$ if I want to use a second rod too which is another reason I rarely do it.

California, by any chance?

Naw, wish I had the warmwater fishing cali does! One north of Cali.

wher are you getting those hooks nathan?60 degree jig hooks?what size?been looking for those

I'm not sure if I can post a link on here, is there some way I can send you a private message with a link?

Nathan-- all of those jigs you tied look really super good buddy!!

Thanks Carl, this summer is going to be all home tied jigs for me, since this is only the second year of crappie fishing for me I am hoping to narrow it down to what is most productive. I can't wait for the water to warm up though, I just looked outside and it's bright and sunny out. Hopefully the water warms quickly, I'm hoping to catch the crappie on the spawn since I have never fished for them in spring, I hate to admit it but targeting fish on beds can be a blast...mainly just because I can sight them and watch them eat my offerings...plus they eat whatever lands in their bed too.

Well I went to my local pond to see how it is doing, way flooded, water color was not too bad. It was overflowing into the river it though, and the river was really high and muddy so it will definitely be a while till I can get some local action...spring has finally arrived and were getting blue skies and sun over here....hopefully the water temp will go up quickly!! Until then  I am still tying.

great work on those crawdad jigs nathan.just think like a crawdad when fishing.some erratic twitches then a glide to the bottom.the more they think it is getting away the harder they will hit.and hang on i have hooked big bass and really big carp on little jigs fished this way.are you using tungsten beads on your other jigs/flies?
