Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Ever see those guys on tv using baitcast reels throwing spinner baits like they weight a half a pound? The lure goes an easy 100 feet..effortlessly.

Me..I get a baitcast reel, and if I am not throwing a weighted worm, it either doesn't go very far..or it birdnests when I really push it.

I had a Procaster 2 many years ago and it was fine..but the three or four ohers I have had were like fishing with a Penn 109. Is it just me, or what?

Yes, Yes, Yes! Ryan M wins the prize.

Like i said earlier, sometimes the gills are biting. I almost always go for panfish first. In the event they are not biting, when I switch over to bass, most bass fishermen will tell you, the baitcaster is best for worms.

This is a transitional phase for me. I lost so much in Katrina, my best reel was ruined completely, some of them washed away. I had to use the stuff that was in my truck in Mississippi, which is the shimano spinner, the fly rod, and some junky B&M jig poles which are trash to me.

Now, I am buying new stuff, trying to get settled with that. I needed a spincaster for panfish and sacalait (when I am not jigging). I needed a new baitcaster to replace the one I lost in Katrina.

Its not like I go out there and fight with old equip, emnt that I have had for years, I am trying to get settled with the new stuff I got.

Casting a decent sized crawfish plastic is not asking too much from a baitcaster. The one I had bought will only cast something really heavy. Cant live with that. Its going back to Amazon this week.

i have a friend who fishes the bass pro reels. he seems to like em fairly well for the money. i started out fishing abu garcias and still love em. ive bought a couple quantums that are verry nice in the last few years as well. i can throw a weightless trick worm with no trouble.

Yeah its the reel...but only once u got it set up right..as they are telling me, regardless of the reel, you don't know if its going to cast unless u get it set up right.

I had an old daiwa procaster that wouldn't cast anything withouth a good bit of weight. Once I removed the the barrels on the spool spindle it began casting.

I'm a big fan of Ambassadeur C4 baitcast reels, for bass fishing.  I did go thru a period of frustration, but now I'm very comfortable with these reels.  Tweak that centrifugal adjustment until you find your sweet spot.  I throw senko worms with no added weight, also lead-head jigs.  I use 30lb braided line, that was another frustration at first, but once I figured out how to use braid on C4's I'll never change back to floro.   You can learn to effortlessly throw a senko a country mile with braided line.  The trick with braid is set your drag significantly softer than you would for the same #test floro.  Braid has a tendency to dig in, and the lighter drag helps minimize this.
