Well you are a paladin in the dark, Johnny. Its a good place to be, too - oyu usually have the place to yourself that way. I certainly appreciate your comments.

When English anglers came over to fish for bluegills in one of our tournaments- they could not believe the fight they had with these bream (any flat fish). They have fish up to 5 lb. that fight less than our bream (bluegills). Their tackle was so light they would have to keep the gills from snapping them off. So - yes, you can overdo it and no the setup I was talking about will NOT help you catch bluegills. But - when talking bluegill fishing, ultralight is NOT 4 lb. Trilene to me - and it…

So - yes, you can overdo it and no the setup I was talking about will NOT help you catch bluegills. But - when talking bluegill fishing, ultralight is NOT 4 lb. Trilene to me - and it isn't even 2 lb. Trilene. Since gills don't usually reach 2 lb. - this line is more thick than needed for gill fishing.

To me, I fish a 1.5 lb. leader on a 2.5 - 3 lb. main line that is just thicker than half the thickness of 2 lb. Trilene. This would qualify or 1 lb. leader would qualify for ultralight when we are talking bluegills.

Then again, I know the majority of everyone haven't even seen lines like I am talking about.

Well you have to define "ultra light" I suppose. It's relative, as another has said.

Compared to what most people fish with, what we have IS ultra light. It certainly is a step in the right direction, however. One of the things I like about focusing on panfish is that most people consider them an afterthought. They fish for them when there is nothing else. Which suits me just fine. Fortunately, when their leftovers are properly applied there is a good chance of success.

Micro light as you suggest is another category altogether. Using such gear to catch shiners qualifies, for sure. Your dedication is inspiring.
I definitely know that - but…tag:bigbluegill.ning.com,2011-03-09:2036984:Comment:1302392011-03-09T23:01:16.530ZJohnny wilkinshttps://bigbluegill.ning.com/profile/chicagofishing
I definitely know that - but American lines are made for crankbaits and plastics (for the angler to get those back out of snags).
Their 4 lb. rating is very low compared to their thickness.
I think that the panfish angler has been left out in the cold and we have had to deal with leftovers in terms of tackle.

It was my hope in this article to open up a whole new world of ultralight and the benefits of being able to fish it. In this case, it paid off with a fish of a lifetime and some great…

I know no one can put together the same tackle use in this article very easily - I am just passing on to me panfish friends that there is a whole world yet to discover. : )
Also note this article was article was written in Dec. 2009.
