It started raining but we didn't stop....I'm glad. We caught several gills close to a pound before he caught the biggest bluegill that I've seen with my own eyes. I tried several jigs with no luck. I caught a few with a Gulp! cricket and Gulp! minnow. Then he says he's got a good one. After at least a minute or two of fighting this fish with a light action combo he pulls this 12" hog out of the water. At several ounces over a pound this fish amazed me. He says he's caught bigger so he released her. The pics don't do the fish justice because he's such a big guy. He's 290 and 6'3". Huge hands. This fish was tall, long and thick! I've caught a lot of gills and nice gills at that but nothing this impressive yet.

Got on the water with a co-worker yesterday morning in search of nothing in particular. I caught the nicest bluegill I've caught in that lake on a point in some shade. I almost thought I was snagged until I seen her. Beautiful. Also caught some redear. Yellow perch came out to play along with some largemouth bass. But the most fun had to be when I went on the hunt for the chain pickerel. I hooked 2 within 15 minutes and both of them shot out of the water mid-battle and threw my hook. This…

But the most fun had to be when I went on the hunt for the chain pickerel. I hooked 2 within 15 minutes and both of them shot out of the water mid-battle and threw my hook. This angered me because I haven't caught one in a while. I'll be back for them and they know it! Those pickerel hit live minnows and the rest of the fish were hitting nightcrawlers. Busy day on the lake as well, lots of boats out welcoming spring. We talked to several guys that were expecting crappie but wasn't having a lot of luck with them. We didn't see any, but we weren't specifically fishing for them either. Sometimes that matters and sometimes it doesn't. Thanks for reading and good fishing to you fellas.
The River Giveth and the River Taketh Away 4/26/14tag:bigbluegill.ning.com,2014-04-27:2036984:BlogPost:5107652014-04-27T00:25:59.000ZJason Preslarhttps://bigbluegill.ning.com/profile/jasonpreslar

I knew the water was going to be cold. I knew the sun was out. What I didn't take into consideration is the fact that my calves would almost cramp up making me worry that I wouldn't be able to make the hike back to my truck after getting out. I was wet wading. On a lighter note I caught the first 3 smallies of the year, all on lizards. Rage Tail (junebug & green pumpkin). Gamakatsu 3/0 EWG hooks. This was a partial Carolina rig.
I fished the usual haunts at first with a crank with no productivity. I found the first two hanging around logs that were partially submerged and the other at the bottom of a small rapid. Biggest was around 14" give or take. I've got to say that I like the plastics for smallies. I usually am a crank and spinnerbait guy in the river but I love the plastics in the smaller flows.

Shortly after releasing the first fish I notice my floating pliers had floated from my pocket. They were the Rapala ones with the foam handles. I was a little disheartened but nothing major....yet. I caught the second fish and moved on upriver trying to tough my way through the cramps that were forming in my left calve. I started getting chill bumps on my forearms. Upon reaching some water that was well above my belly button I thought to myself: this is it, I'm heading to the truck. I made a couple casts upriver and BAM. Third fish on. Landed it and released it. I turn around to head for the bank. Now the front muscle adjacent to my shin bone was cramping and I almost couldn't operate my foot naturally. I look down when I was several yards from the bank and notice my entire Plano gear box has disappeared from my cargo pocket. This made me angry. At least 8 cranks, 3 spinnerbaits and a multitude of plastics, jigs and hooks now lay hidden on the river's bottom. I tried shuffling my feet around to locate it but then realized I had to leave.

Hiked a few hundred yards uphill back to the truck. Painful. I had developed a headache quickly during the hike. I was walking like a zombie. And on top of the cramps I had wet wading boots on. I performed some calve stretches and eventually made my way home. I would've loved to have pictures but I don't get my new phone til Friday. First bronze of the year! Interesting way to start the river wading for 2014.
4/23 Four Species in the Yaktag:bigbluegill.ning.com,2014-04-24:2036984:BlogPost:5099062014-04-24T01:30:00.000ZJason Preslarhttps://bigbluegill.ning.com/profile/jasonpreslar

Got 2-3 hours in the yak on the water after work this evening and scored 4 different species. I used the baby shad jig under a float around brush for the most part. Ended up with 5 crappie (white and black), a redear and a largemouth. Love fishing these brush piles in the yak. Also, as usual I missed several solid strikes.

I had off 3 days straight and spent a ton of time on the water. Picked up a sunburn, several bass, a bunch of crappie and some relaxation on the yak. I have no pics cause i lost my iphone and this one sucks. (Get a new iphone in a week) I ended up catching a 5-6lb largemouth on a 2" grub under a float while crappie fishing (22"). With 4# line and a light crappie outfit that was interesting and she took me for a ride in the yak, but i landed her. Caught the crappie on Bobby Garland's baby…

With 4# line and a light crappie outfit that was interesting and she took me for a ride in the yak, but i landed her. Caught the crappie on Bobby Garland's baby shad (threadfin shad & blue ice) and also caught them on Charlie Brewer's 1.5" paddle tail grubs. The crappie were tight to cover in brush and i had a blast finding them. My brother also joined me and a beautiful 2lb bullhead cat on a plastic worm while bass fishing.

Pics will be posted after the next week when i get the new phone. LOL

Any body that has been crappie fishing lately, I'd like to hear from you on what you had luck with and where on the lake! Thanks fellas
On The Water in 2014tag:bigbluegill.ning.com,2014-01-02:2036984:BlogPost:4666362014-01-02T00:15:52.000ZJason Preslarhttps://bigbluegill.ning.com/profile/jasonpreslar
I've wanted to start a blog for a few years now and keep it updated throughout the year and until now I've forgotten to do it on New Years Day....
I've chosen to do this on this site only so I hope you guys will chime in frequently throughout our new year of 2014.....
I've always been amazed at how I get completely and overly obsessed with a certain species of fish only to find myself weeks later hunting a different species just as seriously....
