Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Digging through some older pics and found this one. This was one of the first decent size channel cats I caught after moving to Utah.

Wow I thought this was a recipe for the catfish.

Just for fun, I was able to dig up my old recipe. You can use Big Red instead of strawberry soda. We had plenty of that in Texas where I grew up but no Big Red in Utah. Here it is:

1.5 cups of cornmeal
1 cup of flour
16-20 ounces strawberry soda or big red
Anise oil

Put the cornmeal, anise oil, and flour into a pot. The amount of oil you use is up to you. I added it until it smelled like licorice. Add the soda and then turn the heat to medium. Keep stirring the mixture until most of the liquid has been absorbed. The dough will be sticky. Put some flour on a counter, cutting board, or other flat surface that you don't mind getting messy and start kneading the dough. Keep kneading and adding flour until it isn't sticky. I would keep mine in the fridge sealed up in a gallon-size ziploc bag. I had buddies who varied the recipe by adding cut up chicken livers or other "scented-offerings". It would take a little longer for the liquid to absorb and more time kneading the dough. It all works. Some things just work better than others! :-)

Awesome info, Glen. The dough bait sounds more like a carp bait... Which cats are known to take.

Believe it or not, I do remember the bait I was using. It was a memorable catch for me. I made some homemade dough bait using corn meal, flour, strawberry soda, and anise extract. It was thick enough to stay on a baitholder hook (a treble would have been a better choice) and I was using just a slip bobber with a sinker. I was fishing in 6 feet of water and this was my first fish of the day as the sun was coming up. That was my first catfish in Utah and the biggest channel cat I had caught at that point. I've since abandoned the dough bait (still a good choice but a little messy) and switched to using strips of carp meat, minnows, and plain ol' nightcrawlers sweetened with a little crawfish scent.

That'll work. Can you recall the bait and method?
