Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

This is only a couple of hundred yards from my house as the crow flies, but a few minutes walk to get to it on the access path.

Nice spot! The downside to having a stream or creek entering a pond is you eventually end up with whatever species call that creek home, living in your pond also. Even a normally dry creek can bring in a lot of fish during a high water event.

It is not bad now. I have been here over 20 years and the last 5 or so have been the best. There was a guy whose lot backed up to part of it that thought releasing giant bass in it was a cool idea about 10 years ago. It took some time to recover from that, but it actually ended up in better shape when it was restocked after that. It had too many small fish before that.

That pond has plenty of potential. It'll take a bit of time, and a lot of love in managing that thing.

It used to have a pretty decent constant flow and my kids would catch crawdads in the back yard. Now it usually flows a little and is nearly always damp except for really dry spells. It's because they built a "no you can't fish here" fake mill pond behind a restaurant on the main road just outside our neighborhood. It feeds that and outflow comes on down the creek. But between evaporation and leeching into the ground, a lot less flows than used to. It still flushes the pond with a fair amount of water. If it rains it is a torrent.

any pond or lake that has water flowing in and out is usually better than a static pond.water is recharged with nutrients and oxygen constantly.spring fed is even better

There is a natural creek that would flow pretty much just off the left bank (I guess; it comes in on the left and it is on the left below the dam). It runs through my back yard just a short distance from the inlet. I am pretty sure they just put a dam in and did little if any landscaping to form it. The banks are fairly steep. The Piedmont is pretty hilly.
