Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

We had zero wind tide on this morning which often cripples the crappie bite on the Albemarle...but leave it to the Fliers to salvage a late season trip.....

Hey Bruce I put up the most current survey......this includes angler reports and scientific sampling........they're cold tolerant so they may be on the move.......although Indiana is included I think their State Record Flier is 4 ounces......

I wonder if we have any in PA?

Thanks Bruce no problem, Fliers are one of the rarest species of sunfish which thrive in swampy, low oxygen environments....we are fortunate to have an abundant population in the Albemarle estuary.......many anglers dismiss them because the smaller fish are very aggressive....but I have studied their patterns and caught fish up to near ten inches......North Carolina shared the world record until it was broken a few years back by a lady in Florida.......I target them with micro jigs because of their smaller mouths but they will attack much larger baits.....very good to eat......not impacted by cold weather either, yesterday they were in a downed cypress tree in eight feet of water near bottom....put my jig on a slow fall and it would often shoot off with the tug of a flier.........I've personally caught them in three states, Virginia, South Carolina and finally North Carolina

Nice eaters, Jeffrey. Again, excuse my ignorance or memory, what are fliers? I think I ask you this another time.
