Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

One the most delicate feeders, few anglers hook this urban treasure- the wild goldfish because their tackle is too heavy. If you want to see one you will need a size 14 or size 16 UltraFinesse hook and no more than 2 lb. leader. 1.5 lb. leader even better. Oh, add some patience, they are notorious for nosing your line for minutes on end before finding the baited hook. Don't set the hook until you see the float glide away..

Yes it was released back in. You are right about there isn't much else to do with it. A garden pond would be great.
Some would advocate throwing this fish in the garbage can - that isn't my way.
Since the late 50's early 60's Departments of Natural Resources have been poisoning waters to kill off an restock fish. I think this practice is medieval and a waste of money (as well as resources).
They restocked with bass, pike which will be poached- quickly.
Within an urban center - I don't think this is a good plan and I am convinced it will be temporary as they lack enforcement, regulations to keep those game fish in there. Bruce - they fight very little! Their take is so subtle because they have to tip up on their face to feed. Mostly you get their head pushing the line around - that, along with a splash of tiny bubbles is your indication you have a goldfish working your bait. But I love hooking them!

Do you release the goldfish back in the pond? Can't imagine what else you could do with them

Why did they poison those fish ,John?

That's on my "fish to catch" list. Was it a nice fight?

Trevor-
As a creek fishermen your gear was probably perfect for these.
I caught it right downtown Chicago surrounded by condos in Lincoln Park. This pond has been stocked by kids, parents dumping their fish bowls for close to 100 years.
Sadly - although temporarily the County has poisoned, drained and carried away 12.5 tons of fish from this tiny pond. It was restocked in the Fall. Soon, it will open to city fishermen who will hammer the game fish and remove them. Soon one of the 5,000 geese that hang out at this venue will carry carp eggs in from 750 feet away in the shallows where the carp come to spawn and soon it will have carp.
Also, soon teachers will send kids home with goldfish, who will house them temporarily in their condo. Soon those bowls will be dirty and goldfish will be walked down and set free by kids, parents, grandparents and uncles.
I can NOT wait for they day real soon when I pull another chunky gold treasure from that pond so I can laugh at the millions that were spent to kill 12.5 tons of fish. I LOVE catching goldfish this size - it is a complete gas.
Look for another goldy post from that pond real soon.

Where did you catch that? I have caught two goldfish in my life. Same little creek. But they were not close to that big, and bit very readily.
