With that little gill flap or "ear" being so small, I'm pretty sure it was a female. The funny thing about this record fish was that after the guy caught it on a trolled tiny Bagley fire tiger "Bang-O-lure", he didn't know that it was a new Lake Perris Record Bluegill until he brought it to the lake store at lunchtime to weigh it. It ended up beating the old record that stood for several years by one ounce! This fish weighed exactly 3 lbs even. When they found out that they had caught a new lake record fish, the two excited, fired-up fishermen went back out to troll the same place that was across the lake and caught another big Bluegill of 2 lbs 12 oz! When I got the actual record fish to mount for the fisherman, I ask what lure was used, and he gave me a lure that was the same model that he used. Now you can't even find that discontinued Bagely bait anywhere! And I'm afraid to use it for fear of losing it!

The "old" Lake Perris Lake Record Bluegill of 3 lbs. that I mounted way back in the 1990s. This is how the guy wanted it painted, even though it was a Florida coppernose.

It was exactly 3 lbs and 13 inches long. I didn't catch it (wish I did!) I made the fiberglass reproduction from a mold of the actual fish.
