Yea Bill. I love to ice fish. Take all of January off just to fish. May start open water when the kids are out of college. 9 and 17 now. Nothing better then pulling a Big Bluegill out of an ice hole.

Thats cool man! I spent 7 hours out on the creek today and bagged 30 stumpknockers, google eye, and a few bluegill. Out of the 6 hours I bet I spent 1 hour promoting the site to people out on the water. I caught several monster gills over 9" today and being the good scout I am I let them back in the water. Only had one to swallow the hook. Ive got to go out of town today so the whole plan was catchin fish for the lil lady that works at my local bait shop. I thought she was going to cry When I give her that bag of fish. All fat fat fat fish that were perfect 6 to 8".

Do unto others as you have them do unto you!
    And take a kid fishing

    Bill!

Alright I have absolutely no confidence in spoons for gills.... Dont hit your desk like that! Pick up your keybord and straitin up! Im outfishin even the oldtimers down here now size and number wise with crickets now. I dont know if its me just believing in them so much or what but any way. I use fathead minnows for my crappie and bass fishing. All I do is long pole. Ever used a spoon as a jig on a long pole? It kinda sounds stupid but at the same time BRILLIANT! After our bluegill spawn this month and me waiting on the dog days of summer for the massice schools in deep water...... Ima try and jig a spoon on a long pole for crappie. Something small Something super lite. Throw a dog a bone and recomend me a couple to order. This could be very cool.

Bill, Watched your video on fishing blue gills ect. with spoons on this site for the 2nd time! Just started giving spoons a try on my local lake in Jefferson Co., Wisconsin, Rock Lake and just started to have success at it. It's a ball! Thanks for turning me on to this method. If you are ever in the area, shoot me an email and maybe we can do some gill hunting together on "The Rock". Contact me at beaglebob@charter.net. Sincerely, Bob
  • Bob Davis

Been out to geneva yet this year.If so are the gills still deep haven't seen anything on Lake-link from you in awhile anxious to try your spoon tactic out there.Tight lines brother.
  • Rob Garner

Hey did make the G this morning managed to locate some schools. Now just got to catch them at the right time.Water was 60 when I left at 10.
  • Eric White

Hey musky you should let me know when your heading up to green lake. i will find my gps and get you the coordinates to 10 cribs that have great gill fishing, and possibly stop out for some fishing.
  • Brian Saeger

No, I haven't tossed spoons at them generally live bait under floats or drifted through deep water late summer. Used to be able to fish from a railroad trestle converted to Glacial Drumlin Trail and catch 10"+ fish, but that changed when they had to replace it.
  • JP

I tried a spoon 1/12 0z. Kastmaster during a fishing trip in early June with some pretty good success. We were fishing in float tubes and drifting in water 20 to 30 ft. of water with heavy weeds on bottom. We tiped them half redworm and dropped the spoon down to the weed bed and reeled it back up a ft. we would jig it occassionally rite underneath our boat drifting. Between the two of us we caught around 30 quality fish redears, gills, and one crapie Thanks for info!
  • Jim Gronaw

Hey Bill...some of our fish are on beds yet and some are completely done. The fish in the last 3 pix are all post-spawn females and I think I got only one male out of the batch. Can only fish this lake from shore and I think longer casts might get me into more fish. Saw a guy and his son there who have done good on slip-sinkers and worm rigs, but they said they keep pretty much all the gills they catch there. Wasn't too happy about that comment. Any way, very few people fish there so I'm gonna have to keep it quiet so that the fishery doesn't get damaged too much. Good Luck!
  • Josh Holley

hey musky mod! can you tell me what your favorite spoons are and a website where i can get them
  • Rob Garner

Hey Bill have you still not made it to Geneva yet this year?I was out the other day, to see if they were spawning yet, but no dice I understand your pattern when you do the spoons. How deep do they spawn out here 10 to 15 FOW. Just curious, I am still learning the lake and its many areas, but would really like to try and focus on just a couple, and go from there.
  • Rob Garner

Hey Bill thanks for the info I figured it would be deeper there just wasn't sure where to start looking.I dont get the chance to fish it as much as I'd like due to the economy but then again if it was better I probably wouldn't have the time to go can't win for losing, right? You do any perching on the big pond if so I think Ill is closed now,but they are starting to get a good bite on here.If interested I can get you on a good area a bit crowded but it always produces.Think I'll try to get back out there this week.Tight lines and may the release into the grease be sweet.
  • Lance A. Cashler

    Bill,
I'm just figuring out how to get them on there. Good to know there's at least two of us. By the way, I've tried fishing with some small spoons and getting mixed results. I don't know if it's spoon type or my working them. I know that would work on bigger fish, especially in deep water. I've watched your video to see how you're working them, but I'm not sure if it's a drag or what. ??? Thanks again.
    Lance
  • Lance A. Cashler

Hey tough guy.. thanks for the heads up on your rig. I shall be giving it thee ol' college try. I'm sure I'll be tapping you for more bits and pieces. You must be like the originator or something..heh.heh..heh..yeah Metalingus..
  • Rob Garner

Hit the Geneva this morning.I would say the spawn is done now if in fact they ever did not real sure on that, but what I did find out was today I was just fishing(black and white kitty for me this morning). On the brighter side I did find the schools in geneva bay.Early they were in 35 a little later they were 31 to 28.One larger scattered school this morning anywhere from 15fow to 32. After I passed this school all the fish seemed to be holding within 1 to 3 foot from bottom holding in isolared weeds just south of the submerged point.
  • Patrick "Bullworm" Olson

Hey Bill! I'm not sure if anyone as mentioned this spoon technique yet or not. Maybe you are familar. Up here in Northern Mn, we use dropper rigs alot through the ice. It's a mainstay for jumbo perch and crappies. I started using them for deep water gills through the ice as well. A dropper rig is a small spoon like you are using but the treble hook is removed, keeping the split ring on the spoon. In stead of the treble hook, I tie on a 3-4inch piece of mono or florocarbon, in the 4lb range, to the ring. For a hook I lean towards a size 8 or 10 circle hook and tip it with a maggot or Glup. It works great!
  • Rob Garner

Actually she caught the only good fish that day action was hot.But was a great day to be on the boat. She got droping a crawler into 45 fow.The schools are really starting to set up out there now.Numerous fish from 30 to 45 fow.Mostly hugging bottom 1 to 3 feet up.However I forgot to bring my spoons with so I could not try it again oh well theres always next week.Only had my 1/10 swede.Wanted to try the 1/4oz this time out.Have a blast cos I know you'll be frying them up shortly after you leave.
  • Lance A. Cashler

Bill, I have not heard of them. I'm still stuck in my teen years. I shall search them out.
  • Lance A. Cashler

Thanks for the righteous web link. I bought as many as allowed. Next, I will give them ye olde try. I also have to say I learned something new watching your fish cleaning video. You are a wealth of info. My kids will appreciate the pin bone cleanup. I've been using an electric knife for years, and will try putting the manual to use just to try it out.

    Thanks again.
  • Lance A. Cashler

Hey, I tried cleaning my fish tonight with the manual knife after watching your video. I do believe it worked very well. Not a single pin bone.
  • John Sikkila

Thanks Bill!....You have a swell page yourself!...Love those sunrise/sunset images!...and those fried bluegill look delicious!...lol!...Thanks again!

No wonder I like ya Bill.
  • Jim Gronaw

Hey Bill...I finally took the big step into Spoonville...and with some giant fish. Those hybrids crushed the hammered silver Pimple and fought incredibly hard! Thanks for all your info. I do believe I was in error...I think I got my fish on the # 3 which is the 1/5 oz model...it was larger than what I normally use for ice fishing.

Cool band shot...I guess I gotta post one of me playing my Tele. see ya!
  • Trevor

  • Bryan McCarty

Thanks for the info Bill. I ordered some Blue Fox Rattlers from www.overstockbait.com . I do have a question on the rigging. I read your post on Deep water spoon presentation and rigging and was wondering where to get the Fluorocarbon leaders or do you buy it in bulk and make your own? Do you have a picture of the rigging you could share with me? Your help is appreciated.

    Kindly,

    Bryan
  • Bryan McCarty

Thanks for the photo Bill it really helps. I do have a quick question. Where do you get your snaps? I've been all over locally and can't find them without a swivel.

    Kindly –Bryan

BYW, is this your band playing in the background? The music ROCKS!

  • Rob Garner

thanks Mod Have been wondering what I was gonna do.All those Lake Michigan perch have my knife getting dull. Will have to start on gills again soon as this bite is about to go away til next year.
  • Patrick "Bullworm" Olson

Hey bud! I read your comment to my Open Invite post, late last night. Sounds like you have her all figured out! There is so many great folks on here, like yourself, that it was something I wanted to do. One never knows where one will be someday and it would be a pleasure to fish with you! Take care! p.s. I'm going fishing with Mr. Sikkila Saturday...EXCELLENT TIMES!!
  • Jim Gronaw

Hey Bill...I caught the hybrid on a worm and another that looked very similar on a jig tipped with a worm below a bobber. They didn't want the spoon...dead calm and about 95 F at 4 pm. Spoon seems to work better over there when its windy.

And, yes, I have gotten Farve comments before, probly cos I hardly ever shave! See Ya!
  • Rob Garner

Have a dumb question for ya.Just wondering how you got the name Musky in Musky mod.
  • Rob Garner
