Hey Bruce, first off great site!! I did catch that fish in my avatar and I believe it is a longear? I catch quite a few of them down in Oklahoma below Grand Lake
Bruce! sites got over 200 members now! If this thing keeps growin and folks stick with it I smell a fish fry soon. Wow. figure cookin for every member at 3 fish a pc thats a all day thing. and can you imagine makin a 50lb hushpuppy ball to fry! haha. KEEP DOIN YO THANG MAIN!
Aw shucks, Bruce! It's an honor to call you my friend! I appreciate the comments about Pond Boss and I appreciate your contributions. It just seems like yesterday when Kayla's bluegill adorned the cover...and we came to Nebraska and met up with Willis and Norm and Shorty and NEDOC and your dad and seined fish in 17 degree weather while the princess recovered in your cabin. What a life we have! And, now you embark on a new adventure. We're rootin' for ya.
Thanks for the welcome Bruce! Stumbled across this site along with "nefga" and thoroughly enjoyed the detailed level of some of the fishery related questions on both.
Can't wait for winter to be over with! I like open water :)
Thanks Bruce, That is the Hybrid I had for a about 6 months in my aquarium, Very cool fish. Sadly the aquarium I had him in was small so I couldn't keep him for long, I plan on buying a bigger aquarum very soon and am going to put one or two 7 or 8 inch Hybrids in it and raise them till there BIG and then release them into the pond wereI caught the at.
Sorry to say that I have no pictures of the large Bluegill. I was fishing at Ketona Lakes by Birmingham Alabama in 1958 with my uncle and some of his fishing buddies. The good old boys from Alabama fished for fun and table food. I baited with a red worm on some very light test line and threw the line into the very clear water. I was using a cane pole and a quill for a bobber. This was the type of fishing that was done in this part of the country. The group that I was with caught many good size Bluegills that day but mine was the biggest. No one had a camera with them, so on the way from the lake we stopped at a local gas station to buy some gas. They sold groceries and had a meat scale and my Uncle Bob ask the attendant if they could weigh my fish. I assume that the scale was close to being accurate, the Gill weighed at 2 pounds and 9 ounces. Uncle Bob brought all of the fish home that day and cleaned them so that my Aunt Mae could cook them for our supper. I will never forget that summer in Birmingham Alabama that I spent with my Uncle Bob and Aunt Mae. I still have the memories of that great summer as a young boy learning how to fish and spending quality time with loved ones.
I took notice of your website browsing through some of 'Musky Mods' you tubes. I must say I'm impressed with all the folks chatting back and forth about a very simple and yet very pleasing activity. And it is very simple, one putting high tech into fishin their missin out on a sweet part of life. Glad I 'hooked-up' with everyone.........
Thanks for the warm welcom Big Bruce! You've got some nice pics on your page! Esspecially the big black bluegill in what looks like some kind of bayou or swamp country. I caught a 3/4 pound black out of the Minnesota River a couple years ago. Its lateral line or "stitch" line was red along with its eye. It was some kinda weird hybrid I think. Nice site man!
Thanks. Sitting here in northwest Pa under a foot of snow and 10 degrees. Just bought a home with a nice strip mine lake out back and wondering if I can wait until spring to fish it or drill some holes one of these weekends and see what is catchable.
I got a chance to try it november and caught a lot of small crappie and a few small bluegill. Don't know if the fish are "stunted" or the big ones were hiding? Caught some nice largemouths in the 2 to 3 pound range.
IM countin the days Bruce. We have less than 8weeks and the bowls in the sand start showin up. I cant wait for that water to get to 72 WOOOOOHOOOOOOO its gonna be a good year. Ive got 22 christmas trees, Soon to have a trailor load of pallets and mounds of tires. Ive gotta go get some CRETE! This years pics are going to be recoredededed catches
Can you put in a search engine for big bluegill members? If you do please put a search by location. This site is gettin huge and its an oppertunity to talk with alot more guys that are fishing under the same conditions as me and it would make it a whole lot easier to view there profiles to see what there catching and maybe start up more discussions about fishing in our regional conditions!
I LOVE fishing for gillies. So happy my buddy John Brown told me about you. I have several buddies that I'm sure would join. Yes good idea about an Italian name. I plan on getting my picture on the sight just as soon as my son shows me how to do it.
Loved the story about the Hidden Pond. Loved the ending when the guy said he remembered the smile.

Hey Bruce... That would be great... If there is anything I can do to help, well I'm just a short E-mail away... by the way... I like your music... Later, Ed
Thanx Bruce. My 2 brothers and I have fished for Bass, Walleye and Gills our entire lives, (over 50 years), but the bluegill has always been # 1 for us. Glad to see a "Bluegill" site.
I think thats a good start! Remeber we fish creeks, rivers and beverdamns alllllllllll year here. NO ICE!!! Also we get our spawning season almost a month a head of yall to. Its good to live in the south!
Bruce, I wish I could post a pic but I caught that one 30 years ago this past spring(I remember well as that was when my bro had his first heart attack). I fileted it up with the other gills I caught that day. Before fileting I did show it to the family as I did not think they would believe it either. That was in the day when we didn't take many pics and didn't have the money to mount. Frying em up was what we did.
Yeah, thanks for the welcome. The crappie is an In-Fish award winner that I got at Piney Run lake in MD last Feb. 15 1/2 in, probly over 2 lbs, put her back. Hoping to go to Deep Creek Lake in West Md next week as ice came on and they have been bustin 12 to 15 in perch and tanker gills nearing 12. Awesome ice fishing lake. Hope to go tommorow in a local pond, I let you know what happens.
We'll see what happens...hope the ice is thick enough...I 'm new to this computer thing, but I'll try to get you some nice pix of some of our bigger gills and some amazing hybrid sunfish, thanks again!
Thanks for the welcome, I saw the link for this site in the newest issue of In-Fishermen. From a quick glance around, I think I will be able to learn alot from here.

chris
I know this is a late post, but I had to watch the football game. Any way, went to a pond about 2 pm today...4 in of hard ice, so I fished...got a 9 in gill on my very first drop! Ended up with 4 nice gills and three largemouths of about 1 1/2 lbs each. Missed some other fish...got them all on a 1/10 oz gold Kastmaster w/ Gulp! maggots in 4 to 5 ft of water...6 in off the bottom...slow and steady jigging. Ice was crystal clear and could see the fish coming up to the hole. We've caught bass to 24 in here in the spring & summer...glad I didn't hook one of those!
Unfortunatly I did not own a digital camera when I got the big one. I weighed it and put it back in the pond. The hybrids have been getting smaller every year since the peak about 7 years ago. I did put a picture of a 13" for my profile picture (though it is truncated somewhat) - if you look at the bottom of the photo you will see my shoe (size 10.5) for reference.
