THANKS FOR THE INVITE JOHN;;  I DONT HAVE ANY IDEA; ABOUT ICE FISHING LURES;; BUT MAYBE; I CAN COME UP WITH SOMETHING FOR YOU GUYS TO TRY OUT!!   WHAT ABOUT;  LIGHT WEIGHT SMALL SPOONS ; DRESSED HOOK ??

  • carl hendrix

OK;; QUESTION FOR YOU HARD WATER GUYS-- DOES COLOR; ON THE JIG HEAD; MAKE A DIFFERENCE ?  IVE HAD THESE PAINTED UP FOR QUITE SOME TIME ; JUST HAVENT MADE ANYTHING OUT OF THEM YET;;; THE PAINT I USED;; WAS WOMENS NAIL POLISH !  THE COLORS I HAVE ARE;; PEARL METAL FLAKE;; BLUE METAL FLAKE;; GOLD METAL FLAKE; AND RED  METAL FLAKE

  • carl hendrix

I FORGOT TO ADD;; THAT I HAD ALSO TRIMMED OFF THE COLLAR ON SOME OF THESE JIGS;; THEY WERE 1/64 I BELIEVE IN THE BEGINNING;; AFTER TRIMMING OFF THE COLLAR;; HAD TO REDUCE THE WEIGHT  A LITTLE--  SOO;; WOULD THESE BE CONSIDERED; AS ICE FISHING TYPES ?

  • dick tabbert

Small is always good. I like paint with flake and glow in the dark paints for mine and as much glow in the dark material I can put on it remembering to keep it small. Just my opinion.

  • John Sheehan

I 've favored the red ,white and Chartreuse colors through the ice but green and Orange have caught also Carl!

  • John Sheehan

Yes Carl, 64th 's are great cold water and Ice fishing  size!

  • carl hendrix

ALSO;; FOR CONSIDERATION;; THESE ;; BOBBY GARLAND; LITTLE BITTY SWIMMERS

  • dick tabbert

OK John your getting me started. Ice jigs a coming. There is a difference between ice flies, ice jigs and ice spoons although for our quarry they are small morsels ment to catch panfish.

  • John Sheehan

Dick , in my ice fishing chronicles I archive the baits I've used for my catches since 2009 to the present (the times there was safe  ice that is) I have used both small and large baits and caught fish but my successes don't mirror GREAT catches and I am willing to mix it up with exploration of newly discovered winter fish holding areas  AND different bait type /sizes /techniques, etc.

  • carl hendrix

  • John Sheehan

Those 'll get the job done Carl!

  • carl hendrix

THANSK JOHN;;  IM STILL TRYING TO GET THE SIZE; COLOR; SHAPE OF ICE JIGS;; THE JIGHEADS I POSTED HERE;; ARE NOW ; MORE MULTI-COLORED;; MOTTED  IN CHARTUSE; BLACK; GREEN; AND ORANGE;; THE LOOK A LOT BETTER CLOSE UP; THAN  THE PIX !

  • John Sheehan

Might have a window Tuesday to ice fish with brother Greg .

  • dick tabbert

Hope it works out for you.

5" AT THE MONKSVILLE ! ABOUT 10 GUYS FISHING .SAW A GUY CATCH A SMALL PICKEREL .TWO GUYS I TALKED WITH REPORTED LOTS OF SMALL GILLS AND PERCH .

  • Bruce Tomaselli

We've had guys getting on a lake near me, but only the inlets have ice. That kind of scares me. It's supposed to hit nearly 60 degrees for two days next week here in PA.

  • dick tabbert

Bruce its better the be scared and safe than unsafe and a plung.

  • John Sheehan

Bruce , i am hoping Tuesday with brother Greg but wont be trusting it after a possible  rain on Wednesday .If I drill 5:" I'll definitely feel safe.I feel safe on 4 "

  • Bruce Tomaselli

Big news! I'm getting out on the ice tomorrow. Try to post a photo tomorrow for anyone interested.

  • John Sheehan

Bruce -best of luck out there one day before a full moon . We found them today in 8-10 feet on the edges of standing timber and weeds.

  • John Sheehan

Fabulous time with my brother Greg ice fishing for the 1st time out  2017.We did real good . 10 Pickerel , 9 Gills, 3 Crappie . Gills were small and hit Butter worms on small straight line and spinning combos .All Crappie and Pickerel except for one each on shiner/ tipups were caught Jigging spoons tipped with Shiner heads and tails .

I gotta say my best tip to ice fisherman is to use the heads and tails of dead shiners on spoons .I saw another fisherman today feeding the dead bait to Gulls  after catching a tipup fish .

  • dick tabbert

Glad you had a good time and the fish are always a bonus. WTG....

  • Bruce Tomaselli

Well, ice fishing was slow today. I landed about 1/2 doz. gills and perch--nothing of any size. I did the best with fly #7 in  photo I posted previously. The ice was abut 4 inches and it was about 52 degrees air temp. My buddy's daughter landed a 25 inch pickerel. I was fishing and not working, so I had a great day.

  • John Sheehan

At least you got out and caught Bruce .Good man! Wow a 25 " Pickerel is great ! How deep were you fishing and how deep was bottom? What kind of structure ?

Greg and I fished standing timber /weed edges very near a Sandy flat .I often do well where two or more  different structures come together .

  • Bruce Tomaselli

Well, ice fishing was slow yesterday until I left at 3:00 PM for a doctor appointment.  My friends moved close to some docks after I left, and by dark, had a total of 26 keepers to go along with the 3 I contributed earlier. Most nice bluegills and perch, along with two nice crappies. Oh well, I guess the fun doesn't start until after I leave.

  • dick tabbert

Man I hate it when that happens.

  • John Sheehan

Bruce , i hear ya about leaving them while they are hitting . It got warm here for a few days and stopped the chances for me but I hope with the cold temps coming in I can do an evening bite on Sunday.I'll let you know . Keep pluggin' man!

  • John Sheehan

Pickerel are on Fire at the Monksville in 8-10 foot depths in the treetops .

  • John Sheehan

Brought the Traditional smoked Trout to Brother Greg's House again this year for Christmas Eve . Alder Chips tasted great! The 5 Men loved it but the 4 Ladies ignored .BAD LADIES!

  • dick tabbert

John They don't know whats good but that worked out in the long run made more for the men.

  • John Sheehan

HA ha yes .Good thing too cause the two Trout were small and devoured immediately . Caught from a small brook , stockers nevertheless .Gotta find a place to get a few 13-14" fatties just before Christmas next year ! Guess thats another NY resolution to aim for .

  • John Sheehan

    Great Appetizers!

  • John Sheehan

Anyone here use Perch Eye on Jiggin' Lure Trick ? I 've done pretty good with that  in years past .Gonna have to try again this year.

  • dick tabbert

Back in the day when we use to fish Lake Erie we always started with shiner minnows. Some times it would get slow a we would use the eyes. The eyes work along with the cheeks they have caught many fish .

  • Tinknocker1

Dick mentioned lake Erie here is a real time camera just click on the Catawba club it was full of people fishing yesterday ... i have a trip planned in March if the ice holds up
