I know that bait can be hard to get sometimes in the winter, so I 've been using Gulp! maggots and earthworms for the past two years and have done quite well on them tipped on 1/80 oz jigs in Feb. Best Feb gill last year was a 11 1/4 incher that hit a maggot. I f waxworms or mealies aren't available then Gulp! could be a good option. Also tipped crappie jigs with them last year when bait wasn't around and got fish on them as well. Good Luck!

Hey Guys, its Feb 15 and the ice just came off of our lakes...you can get big gills, even from the shore, if you can float tiny ice flies or 1/80 th oz jigs tipped with bait just off the bottom with sensitive slip floats or bobbers. As soon as the ground thaws and the garden worms appear you can 'wind-drift' these baits on # 8 or # 10 circle hooks over sun warmed shallows in the northwest and north east sections of ponds and lakes where gills will move in where the aquatic activity is starting up. No need to wait for spawning fish...they're biting now!
A GREAT TIP FOR BOTTOM FISHING. I USE ROD HOLDERS. PAINT THE TIP OF YOUR POLES WITH BRIGHT RED PAINT. IT WILL LET YOU WATCH THE TIP AT THE SLIGHTEST BITE. I HAVE FOUND RED WORMS THAT I RAISE PROVE TO BE TOPS IN LIVE BAIT. I HAVE USED SHRIMP, CORN ,CRICKETS AND MAGGOTS BUT I PREFER WORMS
I do most of my fishing on the bottom. I usually have a couple small split shots about 16" above the hook. I will start with letting the bait(worms/bacon/hot dogs) sink to the bottom, if it makes it that far before being eaten up. If it makes it, I will hop it off the bottom and let it sit a second or 2 and then repeat. That is how I start. Some times I stick with that approch or I change it up depending on what the fish want. If they are suspended and active would rather jig my bait past them then use a float. I'm not sure if it more effective but I like do it that way.

Early in the year, April, first part of May I fish in 12 to 18 ft on a transition from muck to hard bottom. Using ice jig and waxie one 1 crank up from bottom. The movement of the boat keeps the jig moving just enough to get em to bite. then in the good old summer time of Aug. I can go back to the same spot and there they are. I fish weeds at other times with the old slip bobber. Hope this helps.
I fish mostly on the bottom. Seems the lil guys are closer to the top just playin around and the biggns like to just lay in the mud and be lazy. Kinda like a fat kid sittin on the ground in the shade at a playground while all the others are up and down the slide round and round the merry go round runnin all over the place
ARE THERE ANY OF U GUYS THAT FISH ON THE BOTTOM FOR YOUR GILLS?

My Dad (83) makes Gill hooks. He puts beads and colored thread on them. work great. I take him and his 81 yr old brother out to catch gills. Have a great time hearing stories of long ago. Good Fishin to all.
