Learned on glass 6 Replies

You bet I used them. I learned on glass. That was all that was available besides the high dollar bamboo. My favorite rod was a little 6 1/2' Heddon 5wt. I started on a real cheap Shakespeare that I…Continue

I might add that I was looking at one of the newer SA lines for my glass 7wt. The line description indicated that the line was one size heavy so I figured to buy a 6wt line. Being confused I called SA and told them my confusion and they tried to lead me to a different line altogether but if I did go to my first choice to buy a 7wt line. Which is actually a 8wt line and my 7wt rod does not like an 8wt line so I am still confused and decided to not buy a line at all. It appears to me that even they are confused.

My experience has been that the recommended line wts on glass works well for me. Some graphites seem to work better with one line wt heavier. It could be that some of you are using newer designed lines. Several of the newer lines are at least a half wt over the spec and some are a full line wt heavier or more to allow for the graphite rod manufacturer's war to make faster and faster rods. I think you will find the Cortland 333 and 444 and SA air cell lines to be true to wt.

Thanks Tooty I knew I remembered hearing they were rated heavier than they were. I plan on using it so didn't want to stress it too much.   I snapped a 7 wt last week when my forward cast caught a little wind and the big popper I was fishing slammed right into the rod I thought it came apart at the ferrule then discovered the rod was in two pieces waaa.....

FORGOT SOMETHING MARK: I know if you are used to graphite and those you usually go up a line weight with , old glass is just the opposite, go down a line weight and it should solve any problems ya got.......

HEY MARK, NICE OLD ROD!!!!! I tend to stay round 7'9"-8' for most of my fly rod needs . However the one you have I would start out with weight forward 6 weight line and go from there. These old rods were overrated for line weights as far as I'm concerned until you get down to the 7'er's . They were mostly 5 weights and seem to cast those just fine. Hope it helps.
Lots of folk say you should start with a double taper 6-7 on these old rods , and if you have that many different weights fine, but if not I'd try a 6 weight first .
Hope it helps and not confuses ya anymore.......
