Most pike flies range from 4” to 9” inches in length and imitate baitfish of various types. The flies are generally tied with a combination between bucktail and synthetic materials such as flashabou. These materials not only give them great movement in the water but also have the added benefit of not soaking up water, which would make them heavier and harder to cast.

Hey to anyone with in 4 hours of Maryland and who love Pickerel fishing... Let me assure you Loch Raven Reservoir is your holy land! In MD we mainly fish Loch Raven for other species like Bass. However,on any day you almost certainly catch more healthy 2-3 pound Pickerel.

These fish appear to be extreme visual predators and anything moving with a flutter they smash! I truly recommend trying this lake if you are a Pickerel hunter!

As a rule, I don't target Pickerel. However when I started tying a fly I call the MM Minnow (see step X step under" Bluegill Fly Tying" Group) I started catching a lot more of them (called "jackfish" down here). The MM minnow will catch all kinds of fish and seems to be a natural for the Jackfish. In a couple of the ponds/creeks I fish I finally started using a braided leader to keep the beast from cutting my tippet. . On a good day I may catch 10 or 12…

On a good day I may catch 10 or 12 Jackfish while fishing for Gills and Bass. Jackfish are so much fun to catch on a flyrod, I look forward to catching them as much as I do anything else. It seems almost any creek fed pond down here has them. ............Don in SC

I gotta catch a Bass and a Pickerel this way. WTH, I catch them vertical jigging and horizontally snapping a plain spoon at other times of the year ,so why not through the ice with a little salt flavor?I will probably only use half as I have some big minnows to use .Will experiment with head half, and tail half and full shiners and try to get them to hit .

Any tips?Would like to hear them.

YEAR OF THE PICKEREL ; 2017 Jan.... Greg and I jigged up close to 20 Pickerel two times out on the ice ,using spoons and Jiggin' Raps with shiner heads or tails tipped on the hook .A favorite Crappie technique is paying off big for Pickerel too!
Keeping Pickerel for eatingtag:bigbluegill.ning.com,2010-12-29:2036984:Topic:1143262010-12-29T20:36:37.855ZJohn Sheehanhttps://bigbluegill.ning.com/profile/JohnSheehan
